Description

The cottage is over 200 years old and for a period functioned as a village school, despite its small size. Situated on a quiet street there are good views of the countryside. The accommodation consists of a kitchen/dining room and bathroom/toilet on the ground floor. Upstairs, the ceiling has been removed to give a high living room with windows in the roof and walls. At one end, a sleeping platform with double bed can be entered using a sliding ladder. Alternatively there is a double sofa-bed in the living room. The cottage is suitable for two people or a couple with a child. One well-behaved pet welcome - additional charge payable

The England region

The Peak District is the first English national park and has fantastic scenery and great opportunities for walking and visiting towns such as Bakewell and Buxton, great houses including Chatsworth and Haddon Hall and fascinating gardens. There are various festivals such as well dressing and Wakes and Wirksworth has its own marvellous Arts Festival every September. Plus a range of local pubs with beer from micro breweries and tea shops with delicious cakes.

Winster

Winster is an old lead-mining village, situated on a hillside a little reminiscent of Cornwall. Miners from Cornwall came to help with the mining in this area and influenced the layout of the village. We are close to both Haddon Hall and Chatsworth and you can walk for miles from the cottage. Cycling is also possible on the local trails but slightly hilly to get there so make sure you have gears or a bike rack! The area is geared up for tourism and has everything from a theme park, Gullivers Kingdom to the quietness of Stanton Moors where you can find several stone circles. We live next door so always happy to help providing information and a pick up from Matlock Station if need be.

“Lovely”

Reviewed 17 Jul 2016

The cutest house in a perfect little village. Hiking trails just around the corner and close to Matlock Bath, Haddon Hall and Chatsworth. I explored the area by myself and couldn't be more pleased. The owner was very nice and helpful. She stood outside waiting for me when I arrived after midnight! The house is quite simply decorated and had everything I needed. I loved the view from the windows and the cute little garden. The wi-fi was great in every part of the house. I highly recommend staying at the Spook!

It was great to have you to stay! Best wishes

“Absolutely lovely and cosy cottage for relaxation and exploring the countryside”

Reviewed 25 Jun 2016

Had a lovely holiday week at the Spook, after doing the L'eroica Britannia vintage bicycle festival in Bakewell I decided to stay a couple of more days and enjoy the wonderful Peak and Derby countryside. The Spook is perfectly situated for several long and short hiking trips, or, if you are like me, a bicycle enthousiast, for taking trips on the bike. Can recommend to anyone who loves the outdoors and the quiet of a small village. Inside the Spook you will find enough to keep you occupied in case the weather isn't that good for outdoors activities, the collection of books is huge and the internet connection works really well, Outside enjoy a view from the garden bench and the sun..I certainly did. Very friendly owners helped with all your questions if needed,on arriving there was a selection of tea, coffee and a nice tin of cookies..(that I ate all of..just too tempting ;-) ) All in all a lovely holiday cottage that I can only recommend very much.
