The England region

Hampshire is a beautiful area of the country, full of pretty countryside and close to the coast, New Forest and the stunning river Test.

With easy access routes from London and the rest of England it makes it a very easy place to get to by car.

Test Valley is England at its best, enchanting with a touch of the wild and beautiful. There is something of interest all year round; aside from fishing, for which the River Test is renowned, the local area is ideal for the other country pursuits such as shooting, riding, rambling and cycling, and there are many local events such as art festivals and country shows. The local area has many fine pubs and restaurants.

The River Test is the centrepiece of the Test Valley; the river is a world renowned chalk stream of particular beauty and famous for its fishing, salmon and trout, which Lord Crickhowell (onetime chairman of the National Rivers Authority) said 'should be treated as a great work of art or music'. Home of the Houghton Fishing Club, an exclusive fishing club founded in 1822, which meets in the Grosvenor Hotel in Stockbridge.

In the picturesque landscape of the Test Valley in west Hampshire, the River Test meanders through ancient woodlands, tranquil water meadows and rolling chalk hills.

Thatched cottages and welcoming pubs in Test Valley's picturesque villages add to the area's charm and there are attractions for all ages, such as The Hawk Conservancy Trust, the rose gardens at the NT Mottisfont, Whitchurch Silk Mill, Laverstoke Mill (home to Bombay Sapphire), Stockbridge and the stunning cathedral cities of Winchester and Salisbury as well as Stonehenge

Winchester

Enjoy the countryside:
Opportunities for walking, horse riding and cycling are abundant in the Test Valley with highlights being the 44-mile Test Way and the annual Test Valley Tour. The Old Barns is located in the heart of the Test Valley with the Test Way on it's doorstep it is ideal for country pursuits. The Test Way was originally a canal, then later a railway, this was removed in the mid 60's and is now a wonderful walk, cycle, bridal way that runs for 44 miles (from Inkpen to Southampton). There are many fantastic footpaths and cycleway in the area.

With the clear chalk streams the River Test and its tributaries on our doorstep, famous for its fly fishing with an abundance of brown trout, rainbow trout, grayling and salmon. We can provide you with links for places to go fishing.
The area is also very popular for hunting and in the hunting season there are local shoots for Deer, Pheasants and Partridge.
There are also many beautiful churches in the Test Valley which can be explored on a countryside walk.

Cities, Towns, Villages and Hamlets:
The cathedral cities of Winchester and Salisbury are 30 minutes away by car.
The New Forest National park is only 20 minutes away by car.
The beautiful village of Stockbridge is 5 miles away and can be reached by car or a picturesque walk, with its shops, tea rooms and restaurants, and the Houghton Club, the oldest fishing club in England.
In the pretty town of Romsey you can explore the Romsey Heritage and Visitor Centre, the magnificent Norman Abbey and Broadlands, the former home of the late Lord Louis Mountbatten.
Andover is a lively market town dating back to Saxon times and here you can visit the nearby Iron Age settlement of Danebury Hill Fort and the Andover Museum and Museum of the Iron Age.
The Wallops are attractive villages skirting a small chalk stream and one of them, Middle Wallop, is home to a World War II airfield and the Museum of Army Flying.

Horsebridge Station (saved from dereliction) is now a beautiful wedding venue or occasional afternoon tea.
Mottisfont is a stunning Village with Mottisfont National Trust House being the centrepiece.
Many visitors also flock to the small church of St Margaret's in East Wellow near Romsey, where Florence Nightingale was buried. Florence's family owned nearby Embley Park, now a school, and at the church you can see artefacts relating to her life.
Other attractions in Test Valley include the Sir Harold Hillier Gardens, Longstock Park Water Garden, Highclere Castle and Houghton Lodge.
With so many fantastic places to eat and drink in the area it is hard to list them all. You will find a list of some of them in your cottage along with details of places to visit in the area.
