Further details indoors

The accommodation has been designed to encompass the magnificent views. The main bedrooms in both no 8 and no 24 have spectacular views of ocean, fynbos & forest. They are elegantly furnished with king beds and en-suite bathrooms including bath and shower, also with splendid views. The second bedroom in no 8 has the same spectacular views and in no 24, it has views of forest and ocean, with a king bed, private deck off bedroom, bathroom en-suite with shower and forest views. The third bedroom in no 24 has views of fynbos and ocean, two single beds and bathroom en-suite with shower.

Further details outdoors

The houses are situated in a protected nature reserve with a combination of indigenous forest and flower species seen nowhere else in the world. Wooden decks leading from the houses are built into the vegetation - the ocean deck and the secluded forest deck. There are cushions to lounge on and watch birds, whales, dolphins. The barbecue is on the protected forest deck. Barbecue under the glorious African stars. Walk on trails through magical forests, to small rocky bays and along cliffs where Zebra, antelope and ostrich roam. Ballots Bay where the river flows into the sea is a fisherman's paradise and the pebbly beach is perfect for foraging and exploring or paddling in the bay. The reserve is accessed via a private road that winds over rivers and up and down steep slopes that some call challenging, we call marvelous. But don't be put off; it is easily accessed in ordinary vehicles.

Location description from owner

The Western Cape region

The Western Cape - arguably the most beautiful region of South Africa - is home not only to endless beaches, rugged mountains, lush forests, fertile farming lands but also to vast tracts of desert and semi-desert areas. The capital, Cape Town with it's landmark Table Mountain, is the first choice of most visitors, but the rest of the region is marvelous to explore. Route 62, starting in Worcestor, winds through quaint small towns, vineyards, wine cellars and spectacular scenery. It includes parts of the semi-desret Small Karoo; an area with a vast array of flowering succulents and small animals. Not to be missed is the Mongoose man, Ostrich farms and the Cango Caves near Oudtshoorn.

but the Garden Route, 4 hours along the coast is essential to explore.

Wilderness

The Wilderness / Garden Route region has it all - beautiful white beaches, ancient forests and the unique Cape Floral Kingdom. The climate is temperate, summers not too hot and winters not too cold.

Cliff Top Houses are situated in Ballots Heights, 12 km from the small town of Wilderness. 10 minutes drive away is famous surfer’s paradise, Victoria Bay, which boasts not only world class surfing, but also an excellent swimming beach. George with its shops, restaurants and cinemas is 15 minutes away. Wilderness, also 15 minutes away has beautiful beaches, lagoon and river, canoeing, great walks, restaurants and country markets.

Sedgefield, 25 minutes away is famous for its award winning Saturday farmers market with gourmet organic products grown in the vicinity. The serene inland lakes flow into the sea here and the beaches are amongst the finest on the Garden Route.

Knysna, 40 minutes away, is famous for it's tidal estuary, fresh oysters, excellent restaurants and beautiful scenery.

The Garden Route is a golfers paradise featuring the most spectacular golf courses in South Africa. It was named 2007 Golf Destination of the Year for Africa by the International Association for Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO)

Other Garden Route destinations like Mossel Bay, Oudtshoorn and Plettenberg Bay are within easy reach.

“Absolutely Stunning!”

Reviewed 29 Mar 2013

We stayed for 3 nights at Cliff Top and were blown away with the house and location, photos just dont do it justice. Having the floor to ceiling windows in the bathroom, bedroom, and lounge make the most of the magnificant view. Sally was a wonderful host and couldnt do enough to help, she even picked up some cheese from the local farmers market for us. Even though it's a struggle to tear yourself away from the property, be sure to stroll around the adjacent forest - we saw loads of wildlife including dolphins. If you want somewhere to relax and recharge, look no further, you cant get a better house and setting, thanks Sally.

“magnificent location - terrific view”

“`Heaven”

Being South African and currently residing in Dubai I almost forgot how beautiful the Garden Route is. Cliff top house at Ballots Heights was amazing to say the least. To be surrounded by "fynbos" and the ocean makes for breath taking views from all the rooms and bath rooms. Although situated in a nature reserve you are just 15 minutes from the nearest shopping in George (for those creature comforts) The road to Cliff Top House takes you through a "magical forest" as my kids called it. For any nature lover a visit to Cliff Top House is a must

“Architectural marvel in the heart of the Garden Route”

We chose Ballot's Heights for our Honeymoon - What a perfect choice! Getting there is quite an experience, as the road goes up and down over the 'heights'. You have to keep a serious eye on the road, since there is a magnificent view around every corner. Sally went out of her way to accomodate us from the moment we got there - service like that we have never experienced! Felt like you were a long lost relative welcomed into their slice of paradise. The house faces a particularly beautiful rocky beach, with the crashing of the waves so close you don't even need a radio...we listened to the sound of the ocean for 7 days. Glass sliding doors let the whole view in, you cannot stop staring at it. The wooden multilevel house is a holiday home out of your dreams. Big living room with couches and day beds, dining table, double volume ceilings, open plan kitchen (fully stocked, by the way, you will not want for anything!). Also features a fireplace that will be the perfect companion to a bottle of Cape wine on one of those windy days! You could easily just spend the day going from the kitchen to the couch and back again. The bedrooms are exquisite, with the master bedroom being the crowning achievement. Full sea-facing sliding doors to let the sea sounds lull you to sleep. The white bathroom has a bath and shower that also feature a full view of the nature reserve and the sea. Then when you eventually tear yourself away from the house you get to experience the nature reserve. Immersed in fynbos, there are numerous hiking trails which we explored every day. You can choose your level of exertion, since many of the trails link up and take you all over the beautiful reserve. You can choose to go down to the sea, scrambling over the rocks, or just do an easy loop on top - just to get your appetite going for dinner. But if you decide to go down to the many rocky spots, you are in for a treat! We spent one afternoon reading and taking photos, totally secluded and totally breathtaking! The reserve is located literally next to victoria bay, as well as the garden route mall - and a few minutes up the hill from Wilderness, so there is more than enough to do if you feel the need to go for a drive. The owners live next door so if there is anything you need, they are literally a few feet away. We would definitely recommend this rental to anyone looking for nature, breathing space, an awesome view (features a great wooden deck as well) and disconnecting from everything! We are already planning our return trip for 2013!

“Most relaxing surroundings with most breathtaking views, absolute luxury.”

Impossible to capture the beauty of Ballot Heights on camera. You have to be there to experience it. Perfect for all ages. Tips - do grocery shopping in town before you take the exciting drive to the house.

“Paradise with a spectacular view”

Reviewed 7 Dec 2012

It was such an exotic little house. They were taking care of every single thing to make it home and cosy. Architecture, furniture, linen, view ...... I wish I could stay there forever. Maybe the directions inside the village to the house can be more clear.

“Absolute belter”

This place is fantastic - I've been back twice in 6 months (although I live in Joburg so it's easier for me). It looks great on the photos, and is better in practice: if I ever build a house in SA, I hope Henry (architect of this place) will design it! The house is lovely and spacious yet compact (we stayed once with 6 adults and it took us easily), with spectacular views. There are great walks around reserve. Vic bay is 10 mins away with a world class surf break and a great vibe, and you're within easy striking distance of the garden route, knysna etc and great Saturday markets. Stay here, you will not regret it...

“A place of unspoilt seclusion”

Reviewed 26 Apr 2012

We stayed at number 23 Ballots `heights just a convenient 20 minutes from George Airport. Its an adventure in itself to get there; through forests and gorges, accessed along a narrow steep road that winds its way to the gate of Ballots Heights. You think the rental car will never make it up but it does and it is so worth while! Undoubtedly one of the last remaining places of unspoiled beauty and tranquility where you can truly experience peace and quiet in a nature reserve filled with an abundance of fynbos, proteas and birdlife. No 23 is set at the edge of a cliff with its most striking feature, the incredible light pouring through the windows with a view of the milk wood forest and ocean and sound of crashing waves below. Sliding doors open your vista to the environment and you can laze away many hours on the patio or on the comfortable couches reading or dozing. With the route in and out of the reserve mastered, Knysna, Sedgefield (check out the market on a Sunday morning but get there early), and Outshoorn (for the world famous Cango caves - do the extended tour) are all within proximity for day trips if you can tear yourself from Ballots. Alternatively, hidden paths down to the sea and private coves wait to be discovered if you are up for some adventure and exercise. If you looking for night life, noise and the City beat this is not the place for you. This is the place to unwind, centre oneself and recharge. You will be captured by its beauty

“Unforgettable”

This is our favorite place on the Garden Route. Once you settle in its difficult to get out of the house. Unbelievable views, Great design, most peaceful place in the world !!!

“Phenomenal Stay, Wonderful House”

Reviewed 19 Apr 2012

I would live in Cliff Top Houses if I could! We stayed for 2 nights in March and immediately felt right at home at Cliff Tops. The house is stunning and very unique! It is both expertly decorated as well as homey at the same time. The location in a private nature reserve near Wilderness was fantastic and provides for great scenery and nature walks. The views from every room of the house were superlative. We loved every minute of it. On top of the high quality of the house, Sally was fantastic and was VERY accommodating. The entire process felt like house sitting from a friend, not renting from a stranger:-) I highly recommend renting one of the houses, but suggest you go with someone you like alot because there's no TV, internet, phone or cell signal! Just nature and a beautiful home to enjoy it from.
