The Greater Manchester region

Situated in the North West of England, in East Lancashire it is a fantastic place with something for everyone. The beautiful countryside on both the Lancashire and Yorkshire borders, (passport no longer need to cross the border) Whether it's hills to hike, heather clad moors to ramble over, rivers and canals to stroll and cycle along, picture-postcard villages to explore, historical sites to roam, lively market towns to shop, the area has many activates on offer. Then there's the City of Manchester.

Manchester is a city with a zeal for life that is both invigorating and exhilarating. With a wealth of dining options, musicals, the opera, ballet, comedy clubs, football stadium and the rest of Manchester's vibrant nightlife scene. The Industrial Revolution, the birth of Marxism, the first computer, Shaun Ryder's elevation to a figure of national renown: Mancunians have seen it all, and know their city is unique - that's just the way they like it

Whitworth

Although in a wonderfully rural setting, Hindle Pastures is still only three miles from Rochdale and barely 15 mins from junction 20 of the M62! in Whitworth bordering Rossendale which has more public footpaths within its boundary than any other borough in the country. The 47 mile long Rossendale Way crosses over the summit of Whitworth's Brown Wardle Hill. Mountain bike magazines class the area as having some of the best riding in the country. Much of its moorland is wild and extensive. Brown Wardle is also popular with hang gliders which border the Pennine Bridleways Mary Towneley Loop attracting horse rider's places as far away as Southern Spain.

On the doorstep of Hindle Pastures you find Healey Dell Nature Reserve, the 'Jewel in the Crown'. It's located at the southern end of Whitworth, Bordering on to Rochdale. Healey Dell is worthy of a visit at any time of the year. It has a wide range of flora and fauna, its own Fairy Chapel and a rich industrial past. The River Spodden flows through the Dell that was once home to cotton mills, woollen mills and even a corn mill. The Healey Dell Visitors' Centre houses exhibitions and organizes walks. The disused railway line and spectacular 100 foot high viaduct afford good views of the Dell and have a level surface for the less agile, with some access for wheelchair users.

Close by Whitworth Square is a designated conservation area. 200 years ago the pioneering Whitworth Taylor Doctors had their practice here. John Taylor was formerly a blacksmith and horse doctor. He lived at Whitworth House, just below the Red Lion public house. The Whitworth Doctors were local bone setters but also treated patients from London and overseas, including the then Archbishop of Canterbury. In more recent times the local Britannia Coco-Nutters have performed there.

From Hindle Pastures you can walk cycle or ride directly onto the moor along the Pennine bridleway for Aprox 2.5Miles to Watergrove nature reserve. Watergrove Reservoir and valley is a grade A Site of Biological Importance (SBI), close to the village of Wardle, approximately 3 miles to the north-east of Rochdale in a south facing moorland valley. Enclosing the valley is a spectacular horseshoe shape ridge of hills, the summits of which are approximately 400 metres above sea level and give spectacular views across the whole area, from the Yorkshire border to the centre of Manchester and the Cheshire Plain.

“Cozy, tranquil getaway”

Reviewed 26 Feb 2012

Definitely need a car, barn is atop a steep hill in a sleepy village near Rossendale. The owners are lovely and despite living next door, very discrete. The house on arrival had been well cleaned and in order. Two bathrooms in a property this size a real plus - also the third bedroom described as a single is actually a small double so it really sleeps 6 people comfortably. The kids loved the setting, the horses and the spiral staircase. The beds are unbelievably comfortable, definitely recommend Hindle to all who need a comfortable, peaceful setting within easy reach of Manchester and environs.
