The England region

Whitstable, Kent

Whitstable

Whitstable is a seaside town in Northeast Kent, Southeast England. It is approximately 8 kilometres (5 mi) north of the city of Canterbury and approximately 3 kilometres (2 mi) west of the seaside town of Herne Bay. It is part of the City of Canterbury district and has a population of about 30,000.

Whitstable is famous for its oysters, which have been collected in the area since at least Roman times. The town itself dates back to before the writing of the Domesday Book. Whitstable's distinctive character is popular with tourists, and its maritime heritage is celebrated with the annual oyster festival. Freshly caught shellfish are available throughout the year at several seafood restaurants and pubs in the town.

In 1830 one of the earliest passenger railway services was opened by the Canterbury and Whitstable Railway Company, and in 1832 the company opened Whitstable harbour and extended the line to enable passage to London from the port. The railway has since closed but the harbour still plays an important role in the town's economy.

“Romantic indulgent setting”

Reviewed 6 Mar 2017

Spent one night here so we could stay over in Whitstable after dinner. The place is decorated beautifully and lovely and clean. Everything thought of including wine and champagne glasses and a small fridge. Biscuits and chocolate a nice touch with the tea making facilities. Rory is a very responsive and welcoming host. Ideally situated across the road from Continental Hotel which has a nice bar. Beach Cafe round the corner does a really good breakfast! My only constructive comment would be that sound carries through from other rooms and upstairs a little so if you are an Uber sensitive sleeper, some earplugs like my husband used did a good job. I am a heavier sleeper and it didn't bother me! Can thoroughly recommend!

“Wonderful rooms,perfectly positioned”

Reviewed 19 Aug 2016

A thoroughly enjoyable experience staying in these rooms, just a minute to the beach, 10 minutes into town. Beautiful rooms just as pictured, complete with wi-if, Sky TV, iron, hairdryers, kettles, bottled water, tea, coffee, glasses and mugs. So thoughtfully laid out and equipped, a large fan for that (occasional!) really hot day and an electric fire in each room for the colder weather. Only possible improvement would be a small/mini fridge but I'm just being picky. Would recommend to all and hope to be back. (Oh, & a big thank you to Steve & Gill for all their help and hospitality)
