Haglathe House is a spacious stone terraced Grade II listed building constructed in 1760. It is next door to the authentic Fortune kipper smoking shop and used to be owned by the Fortune family. The late Bill Fortune told us that they used to smoke fish in the range on the ground floor of the cottage.
Haglathe House is located in one of the most attractive old streets of Whitby, one minute from the beach, 199 steps leading up to Whitby Abbey, shops, pubs and the harbour. It is tastefully furnished to a high standard and retains some nice old features like an open fireplace in an original Yorkshire Range in the first-floor living room. From the second floor window, across the rooftops, you have views of the sea all the way to Sandsend.
Close to beach and cliff walks. Well-behaved dogs welcome.
Yorkshire Range open fire in first floor lounge.
Genuine Victorian cast iron bath in first floor bathroom.
Full central heating.
Large en-suite bedroom on top floor not suitable for persons with limited mobility - narrow winding stair.
Bed in back bedroom is 3/4 size.
Free wi-fi access.
TV & DVD player.
Parking is in public car parks, about a ten minute walk.

The Yorkshire region
Charming market towns nestle against a backdrop of rolling farmland, ancient woodland and beautiful heather moorland. Historic houses, atmospheric abbeys, stunning coast and picturesque villages... there is so much to see and enjoy across North Yorkshire.
Whitby is a small seaside town located on the North Yorkshire coast, in the North East of England, between Scarborough and Redcar. But it is also rather more than that.
Whitby is isolated from the surrounding major towns due to the protective influence of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park and the local geography. There are no motorways, dual carriageways, planes or high speed trains connecting Whitby to anywhere else - and it seems very likely that there never will be. Annoying when you want to get to here in a hurry, but such an important part of the unique ambience. A lost world, stuck in time and dripping with history.

"Cute cottage in a terrific spot in an interesting town"
We stayed in Haglathe House in June 2013 with 3 teen/young adult children. The cottage is very clean and fresh with everything we needed except a washing machine. The narrow cobbled street is cute though parking is some distance away, and there is a strong smell of kippers in and around the house from the famous neighbouring kipper shop. Liz was helpful and available. Love Whitby!
Since this review, we have sealed all the downstairs cupboards adjoining the kipper shop and have had no further negative comments about this issue.
