Location description from owner

The Northland Region

Whangaroa is situated on the east coast in the Far North, about 3.5 hours' drive north of Auckland, 25 minutes' drive north from Kerikeri and an hour's drive south from Kaitaia. The wild West Coast of the Hokianga harbour with its artists, dunes and kauri trees, is a day's drive from Whangaroa, but is well worth a visit.

Known as the 'Winterless North", daytime winter temperatures average round 16C (58F). Snow is unknown up here, although occasional frosts occur. Summer temperatures average round 25C (80F).

With its 144 islands and wide-open bays, the Bay of Islands is a paradise for water-sport lovers - sailing, yachting, fishing, swimming, or just relaxing on the beach. The Bay of Islands is just a 40 minute drive from Whangaroa.

Whangaroa has been described as "perhaps the most beautiful natural harbour in the world".

Whangaroa

Whangaroa is home to some of New Zealand's best sights - the Puketi Forest with its towering kauri trees and native birds; the Cavalli Islands and the Rainbow Warrior's final resting place; the family-friendly Tauranga Bay and the surfers' paradise at Taupo Bay; Butterfly Bay where monarch butterflies overwinter; and the "million dollar views" on the Wainui Road coastal drive.

Kaeo (the nearest village) has a Four Square supermarket, petrol stations, a hairdresser, boutique, coffee shops, an Indian restaurant and a takeaway.

Geographically, the harbour and village of Whangaroa are just a short drive from the golf courses at Kauri Cliffs, Carrington, Kerikeri, Waitangi and Whangaroa itself. Matauri Bay is the launching pad for boat trips around the Cavalli islands or to dive the Rainbow Warrior.

Doubtless Bay is a 40 minute drive away, with Mangonui being famous for its Fish and Chip shop, whilst Coopers Beach and Cable Bay have white sandy beaches.

Whangaroa is ideally located for visits to the Bay of Islands, Kerikeri and Paihia, Kaitaia and Cape Reinga (New Zealand's northernmost point.

Dine in the local vineyards, dive the Rainbow Warrior, walk the great walks of the North, hug the huge kauri trees, eat the freshest seafood, pick your own oysters from the shore, swim and relax at one of the many white-sandy beaches, fish, play golf, visit the local farmers' markets, take a day's trip to Cape Reinga and 90-Mile Beach, immerse yourself in Maori culture, or visit the Hundertwasser toilets and ride the steam train in Kawakawa, or browse the numerous art galleries and gift shops.

Reviewed 9 Jul 2015

Mum and I really really enjoyed our two day break that both restored and refreshed our senses. The first time we visited was straight out of Hansel and Gretel - we were heading up the hill to see the view of the harbour and followed these regular clear signs that lead us right to “Prima a Situ” (meaning: Top Spot) - Whangaroa Harbour. Terry the host, invited us in for a cuppa and we knew then we would be back to stay! It has many wow factors - as you go through the gate and up the driveway, you feel you are alone on this point of Whangaroa Harbour and have left the rest of the world behind at the gate; the two guest rooms and onsuite of accommodation was 5 star (little touches like ironed sheets what a luxury), the wide wraparound balcony of the bedrooms and lounge has very comfortable lie back bean bags to sink into as you breathe in the serenity and enjoy the birds eye view of the harbour. It was a joy to use the gourmet kitchen, with large corner windows made making meals a delight. Terry has really considered all the wishes and whims of guests as if he has created the holiday he would like - very intuitive and he's full of local knowledge. You can tell his love of the area is what made him settle here. We haven't tried the 39 steps down to the water for rock oysters yet - must leave some treats like that and the bush walks for another ocassion. One thing I enjoyed was reading the signs for the native trees and bushes on the expansive property. This is a unique and special place. We will return!

Owner's reply: Hi Rozita ! and Kiaora! what a lovely review, for which I thank you! Not much I can add to it really, you have lavished deserved praise on Prima a Situ. I just would like to add, that I love to share the natural beauty of this 'top spot' with my guests; yet leave them all the privacy they want. To accommodate more sharing guests and to spread the views: I now offer my King Bedroom with its shower & bath, with its bidet; its sunrise views from the exterior outside shower with awesome seaviews! You will love that, when you return; soon, please!
