Description

North Mill has 1 double and 1 twin bedded room. The double has an ensuite power shower/loo and the twin has a bathroom attached with power shower and bath, loo etc. There is a sitting/dining room with a piano and antique furniture and paintings. There is a fully fitted gas kitchen. French windows lead from the sitting room into the garden, with free range chickens, and is surrounded by water, where you can wild swim, canoe and fish.

Wareham is a delightful old Saxon market town on the edge of the Purbeck Hills and the Jurassic coast is only 9 miles away. The town is enclosed by grass walls (an ancient monument). The walking is fantastic and the miles of sandy beaches at Studland and Swanage are close by. Just across the chain link ferry to Sandbanks you are in Poole and Bournemouth. Corfe Castle must be worth a visit and Lulworth Cove is just 10 minutes away. Inland you can visit Hardy country, his house at Max Gate, Dorchester and Maiden Castle.

Further details outdoors

North Mill's garden is shared by the owner and is surrounded by water. It is mainly lawn with trees and shrubs. There are walks along the towpath of the river and across the water meadows into the countryside. The railway station, main line to Waterloo, is a 5 minute walk and the bypass to Dorchester, Weymouth and Swanage is just across the watermeadows. This makes Wareham a quiet little town with 2 supermarkets, 2 delis, 8 pubs, little shops and 2 Indian restaurants, a Thai, Chinese, 2 fish and chip shops, a Pizzeria and The Priory Hotel. Market days are Thursdays and Saturdays with a Farmers' Market twice a month in the Town Hall.

Location description from owner

The England region

Dorset is becoming rather well known now and you do not just pass it by on the route to Devon and Cornwall. But there is so much to do and see in this small county from lovely sandy beaches, rocky coves, seemingly undiscovered villages and little country lanes leading to undiscovered places.

The famous places like Corfe Castle, Studland beach, Worth Matravers, Lulworth Cove are all within easy distance of the mill but the interior of Dorset is well worth a visit and trips to Dorchester, Sherborne, Weymouth, Chesil Beach, Lyme Regis etc. are a must for anyone wanting to discover the delights of this county.

Wareham

Wareham is situated between 2 rivers, the Piddle and the Frome and is surrounded by the Saxon Walls, an ancient monument and well worth the walk around. It is full of history and the museum is a great visit. Market days are Thursday and Saturday and every 2 weeks there is a furniture and artefacts auction in the East Street salerooms.

There is an annual carnival in August and the town is closed for the parade. Corfe Castle is a short drive away and the Swanage Railway puts on steam trains all year round and soon the steam is coming back to Wareham. You will then be able to 'bucket and spade it' all the way to Swanage and leave the car behind.

“Ideal base for Wareham and surrounding area”

Reviewed 9 Jan 2017

Situated just a short walk from the centre of Wareham, North Mill is a charming house which provided four of us with comfortable, warm accommodation during a cold winter break. The owner, Sally, was most welcoming and we found the ample self-catering facilities and the ability to walk nearby restaurants/pubs suited us perfectly. Some eggs from the hens in the garden were a bonus!

Owner's reply: Thanks Martin. It was lovely to have you all to stay. Hopefully you will return for a repeat visit. Sally.

“Brilliant!”

Reviewed 30 Jun 2013

We had a brilliant stay! Beautiful cottage, stunning scenery, excellent location, lovely hospitality. Sally was fantastic. We could have asked for a better host. Comfortable beds, soft linen, power showers, cosy fire...the list goes on!

“"Best of British!"”

Reviewed 10 Jul 2012

Forget the weather and just induldge in this oh so British setting by the river. The 800 year old building just oozes characture and charm with a modicum of modern day conveniences. The garden with friendly chickens supplying the eggs, the sea trout jumping in the river along with the local swans, the abundant flora and superb hospitality of Sally the owner made this such a special holiday.

“Home From Home - with extras!”

Reviewed 4 Oct 2011

With Sally's hospitality, the peaceful location and comfort of North Mill, we had a perfect relaxing holiday. Lots of nature to observe; chickens in the garden, fish in the river, all sorts of birds including a flash of kingfishers darting about, cows in the field and the odd friendly local too! So peaceful and traquil - perfik!

“A home away from home”

Reviewed 2 Oct 2011

From start to finish, our stay at North Mill was perfect. The house is beautiful, well appointed with all comforts and in a great location. The landlady is a fount of knowledge on the area, very helpful and even offered to baby sit our 18 month old.

“Warm welcome in a historic watermill”

Reviewed 9 Sep 2011

An old watermill at the northern end of the nice town of Wareham with typical (at least what we foreigners think) english furniture. Beside a small river with swans and ducks, there is a very nice garden with chicken. The owner was very kind an helpful in any situation. She surprised us with flowers and great home made jams. The fridge was filled!

“Fantastic!!!”

Reviewed 8 Sep 2011

We had a fabulous time at the cottage. Myself and my husband went with our two boys age 9 and 7 in July 2011. The cottage and its setting are just fantastic and Sally was a wonderful host. We couldnt fault it in any way!!!

“A peaceful and charming location.”

Reviewed 24 Aug 2011

North Mill, Wareham is a must for a romantic break, peaceful getaway or, like us, a family holiday (children aged 9 & 12). Our host was very welcoming and knowledgeable about the area. Thank you Sally for the tips of which beaches and restaurants to try. The accommodation facilities are 1st class. The bedrooms, especially the beds, were so comfortable, that during our stay I had the best nights sleep in ages. The garden and River Piddle were the highlight for me. Don’t forget your fishing tackle and license, as our youngest caught an eel and a Rainbow Trout in one afternoon. Perfectly located for the cream of Dorset: Corfe Castle, Tyneham Village, Arne RSPB reserve, Swanage (on the steam train is a MUST), Poole and Brownsea Island, to name just a few all within a short drive. A fantastic riverside location, a beautiful holiday home and a welcoming host; all together a perfect holiday which we would recommend and repeat at the drop of a hat! Thank you once again for sharing North Mill with us Sally.
