Formerly a lead mining village, Wanlockhead can boast that it is Britain's highest village lying some 1531 feet above sea level. That aside the village can also boast that it is surrounded by the most stunning countryside and breathtaking landscapes such as the well known Mennoch Pass.

Perhaps the areas most oustanding feature is the diverse variety of activities easily accessable from Wanlockhead. Walk out the front door and you are actually on The Southern Upland Way, one of Scotland's most popular walks / treks. With this being one of many routes available it makes Grans Cottage a popular hikers destination.

We now have skiing in the winter in the Lowther Hills area, search for skiclub.lowtherhills for more information.

Wanlockhead

Second to that is Grans Cottages proximity the hidden treasure that is the River Nith and more importantly the fishing available from Buccleuch Estates.

Part of the Duke of Buccleuch's Drumlanrig Castle and Country Estate they have a stunning variety of fishing available including Wild Brown Trout and Stocked Rainbow Trout fishing on 5 private and beautiful Lochs and over a two mile stretch of the River Nith for seasonal Sea Trout and Salmon fishing.

The fishing is amzing value for money and would suprise most how little it costs to get top game fishing in Scotland. Tie this in with a stay at Grans Cottage and what is often seen as an unaccessable and expensive sport can become available to everyone.
The Drumlanrig Estate also has a well mapped walk and Mountain Biking routes to suit all levels.
Grans Cottage is situated to the North Eastern corner of Dumfries and Galloway with many beautiful towns within easy driveing distance.

Wanlockheads closeest neighbour is the lovely village of Leadhills with its very own grocery store and pub. The town of Sanquhar is only 8 miles away with a range of shops, takeaways and banks. Other neighbouring towns are Moffat, Thornhill and even Dumfries is only 31 miles away, accessible within the hour.

“Beautiful Scenery and Home from Home”

Reviewed 13 Apr 2013

We have stayed at Gran's Cottage on a number of occasions, simply because we love it. We feel we can truly get away from it all whilst still having all our creature comforts. The cottage itself is very homely and well equipped. It's like a tardis inside. The cottage is set in some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen. We have stayed in a few different seasons and the Hillsides surrounding the cottage change dramatically. In the winter they can be filled with snow, but my favourit time to come is late summer. In the morning you can sit in the lounge room and look out the patio doors to see rabbits up early feeding on the beautiful purple heather on the opposite hillside. If you get a clear night you mustn't forget to go outside and look at the stars. I guarentee that you will never have seen a night sky like it. You will see millions of stars that you have never seen before that feel so close you could touch them. The cottage is ideally placed in the village to visit the mining museum and there is the railway that runs from Wanlockhead to Leadhills and back again. Although there is a fully equped kitchen we always like to eat out whilst on holiday. The Wanlockhead Inn is a two minute walk from the cottage where they offer a warm welcome and serve food. We have eaten here sereveral times and we like it. There is a restaurant in Leadhills too which offer a good menu and again is very nice. Further a field you can drive to Thornhills where there is a range of cafes, pubs and restaurants. There are some lovely shops here that stock some beautiful artwork and gifts. There is also Sanquhar where there are butchers, bakery and other shops. I always stock up on Mutton pies at the bakery here and plain loaves before coming home. Drumlanrig castle is well worth a visit. The tour is very interesting and the grounds are simply stunning. If you after a home from home where you can truly get away and relax then Grans Cottage is for you. There is beautiful countryside to explore and further a field there is plenty to do in the surrounding areas.

Thank you Mrs S for your kind words. I know the cottage is by know means the Ritz but the very fact you feel at home means alot to me. You always leave the place immaculate which means alot too, Thank you. I hope to see you soon. J
