Description

Villa Avra, Vrisses, CreteFree wifi

From its lofty vantage point 2kms uphill from Vrisses, guests at Villa Avra are able to marvel at the fine views across terraced hillsides planted with olive trees and down wooded valleys to the sea at Georgoupolis, 6km distant.

This beautifully finished Villa offers spacious accommodation laid out over three levels. Achieving a fine balance between privacy and isolation, it shares its hillside position with a select few individual villas, which are sufficiently spaced not to overlook each other.

At garden level, the lower floor of the Villa is given over to an innovative inside/outside living area furnished with comfortable rattan seating which has ample space to accommodate a table tennis table for the more active. This shaded area is entirely open to the prettily laid out gardens featuring a terraced rock garden, lawns, a splendid covered barbecue area furnished with dining table and chairs and of course the lovely 9m x 5m pool.

Stairs from the open ‘garden room’ lead directly to the first floor of the house. At this level, a dining bar/table separates the living area from the smart and well equipped kitchen. Sliding picture windows on two sides of the sitting room produce a particularly light and airy space, where a huge fireplace, stone walls and traditional Cretan effects seamlessly blend in a fusion of traditional and modern, with a little raised study area at one end. A balcony, overlooking the garden and furnished for dining leads directly from the kitchen.

The second outside living area is at upper floor level, where the three bedrooms share access to a very generous covered terrace with elevated views down a wooded valley to the sea. Each of the two tastefully adorned double bedrooms has an attractive en suite shower room and the occupant of the single bedroom has the use of a shower room on the first floor.

The little villages of Maza and Filipos are almost within wandering distance and although they offer little in the way of facilities other than a small taverna and a cafenion, Vrisses, five minute drive away, has everything you could expect from a small town - bank, butcher, minimarkets, (rather wonderful) baker as well as a handful of tavernas.

Further details indoors

The well furnished open plan living area is notable for its comfortable seating, with a choice of two leather sofas around the large coffee table by the fireplace. On the far side of the room is a formal dining area and then the well equipped kitchen with all mod cons including a small dish-washer.

At first floor level are two double and one twin bedroom each with its own private terrace/balcony and sharing a family bathroom. There is also a shower room on the ground floor.Bonus bedrooms: Built into the eaves of the house at second floor level and reached by a fairly steep wooden staircase and through a curtained doorway, is a simple double bedroom with pine floors, low level bed, bedside tables and a small sitting area but with a fan but without air con. There is also a single bedroom on the ground floor. As Villa Artemis has just one bathroom and one shower room, we consider this Villa best suited to parties of 6 or less. However if you are a party of up to 9 who would like to use all 5 bedrooms then you are welcome to use these bedrooms at no extra cost.

Further details outdoors

Patio doors from the living room open out to a covered terrace overlooking the attractive 9m x 4m pool with lawned gardens to the side and a number of shady olive trees, plus a purpose built barbecue with a tiled patio area offering the same wonderful open vistas of the countryside below. For wining and dining theres a good choice of tavernas in Vrisses but for a simple meal and a touch of real local colour, visit the cafenion in the tiny village of Maza just 5 minute drive down the hill from Philipos and already a favourite with our customers staying in Villa Artemis. If you would prefer not to stray far from your lovely surroundings then Despina, the owner of Villa Artemis lives locally and will happily prepare and deliver a Cretan Dish or two at a reasonable cost. Georgioupolis with its long sandy beach and a huge selection of tavernas is a further 5 minutes drive.

Location description from manager

The Chania Prefecture region

Still relatively refreshingly authentic our old favorite West Crete & Chania just waits to be explored. Here, the magnificent White Mountains bestride the landscape and melted snow from their high slopes waters the fertile coastal plains, where orange, lemon and olive groves flourish and superb fruit and vegetables of every description grow in amazing profusion. This part also boasts some of the island`s best beaches, especially the coast west which is one long 15km stretch of sandy beach broken by rocky outcrops and bustling villages with numerous waterside tavernas, virtually untouched by time or tourism.

Vrisses

Vrisses, Crete

Although Georgioupolis with its lovely sandy beaches is now a thriving seaside resort it still retains a pleasing rural ambience and leisurely pace of life. Numerous tavernas and cafes surround the bustling village square whilst in little side streets you will find a number of small shops selling jewellery and local pottery. Down by the river the fishermen with their boats and nets add a tangy whiff of the sea to the village atmosphere and here it is possible to hire a boat and paddle upstream towards Lake Kournas spotting turtles and fish as they drift by.

Getting around

Taking the old road out of Georgioupolis it is just 6 kms to the village of Vrisses, a main stopping point for buses to the south coast harbour town of Chora Sfakion, where ferries ply between Loutro, and far flung Paleohora as well as Agia Roumeli at the foot of the Samaria gorge.

“Lovely villa, fabulous holiday!”

Reviewed 29 Nov 2013

This is a lovely, spacious and beautifully maintained villa. There was loads of room for 4 of us. The views are spectacular and the pool area is great, with lots of shady space as well as space to sunbathe. The rooms are all tastefully decorated, with a real Cretan feel. The kitchen is well-equipped. The only minor drawback (for me - the rest of the family was untrouubled) was the winding, mountainous road up to the villa, but this is the trade-off for the lovely views and peace once you get there. We would definitely stay there again.
