Location description from owner

The Pays de la Loire region

Being located on the French Atlantic coast the Vende is blessed with some of the sunniest weather in France, it is equivalent to the weather found on the French Riviera. Its coastal location gives the area a mainly maritime climate, but that is only part of the reason for such wonderful weather, and several factors come together to contribute to the Vende's magnificent climate.

In Vendee there is something to do for everyone from, Theme Parks, Towns and Villages, Chateaux & Churches, Beaches, Adventure Parks, Amusement Parks, Water Parks, Markets, Zoos and Gardens, Museums, Rivers of Vendee, Vendee War Sites.

Vouvant

Vouvant - one of France's most beautiful villages

All over France, there are villages which proudly carry the title of being among the most beautiful in the country. Always worth a visit, these villages rarely disappoint, and Vouvant is one of them. Set amid the verdant countryside of the Vendée department, not far from the Atlantic coast with its islands and resorts, Vouvant oozes charm and authenticity

Historical buildings to explore

Vouvant is intensely pretty, with its idyllic location on a bend in the lazily flowing River Mere, and its historical buildings that include the Melusine Tower and ancient ramparts, an 11th century church and quaint little streets lined with pretty artists cottages and ateliers (workshops). And although the village is small, there are a few shops, bars and cafés. A wonderful mediaeval festival is held every July and August.

Heritage of Mervent

Mervent is best known for its natural heritage, although the village does have a built heritage to see as well. Sadly, the foundations are now all that remain of the original castle, but the ancient church still stands and is certainly worth a look. The houses are unassuming but typical of the region and many have authentic and original features. However, it is the natural heritage of Mervent that really shines. There can be few places on earth so idyllic. The Forest of Mervent Vouvant is a green paradise of woodlands, walking trails, nature and waterways and lakes.

Shops and amenities found in Mervent

Mervent is not a large village, and it is decidedly rural, but it has some useful and pleasant amenities all the same. A handful of shops offer most everyday needs, and a few bars and a couple of restaurants complete the picture. Just a short drive away (about ten minutes) is the stunning town of Fontenay le Comte, where there are supermarkets, many restaurants and all shops and services.

Heaven for lovers of outdoor activities

Being set in the Mervent Vouvant Forest means that Mervent is a perfect location for lovers of outdoor activities. Walkers will be in heaven, as the forest trails go on for ever in an atmosphere of plain nature and utter tranquillity. You can also enjoy seeing the countryside from horseback or a cycle. The lake at Mervent is great for swimming, kayaking, sailing and fishing.

Visit fascinating Fontenay le Comte

Getting out and about to explore the surrounding area will almost certainly take you to Fontenay le Comte, a well known "beautiful town". Fontenay le Comte has masses of architectural heritage to explore, and its fascinating layout of three concentric circles is bound to intrigue anyone with an interest in old town planning. There is a lot to see here, so allow a full day in order to get the most out of a visit.

Enjoy the Marais Poitevin marshes and the coast

The Vendée is an unusually rich area in terms of natural attributes and features, so you can enjoy the various delights of the Marais Poitevin marshes (also known as the Green Venice of France), deep, cool pine forests, as well as the sandy beaches, fishing villages and seaside resorts of the coast.

Go horse-riding or try sand yachting

Many different sports and activities are on offer in Vouvant and its environs, so whether you like the idea of going horse-riding, walking or cycling in the countryside, playing golf or tennis, swimming in the sea or even sand yachting or surfing, you will find something to keep you busy here.
