The Pays de la Loire region
Known for warm dry summers (3 days' rain in 4 months in 2009), the Vendee is popular as a holiday destination, with visitors coming from the UK, Belgium, Holland and Germany, as well as from within France. The landscape is essentially rural, with rolling countryside, mainly below 220 metres elevation.
Warm summers, long (and can be fairly hot (38C) days). Lots of history. This was once "English" Aquitaine - Queen Eleanor's home at Neuil sur l'Autize is only 30km away. The Venise Verte (the drained fens) are also an interesting tourist attraction, with trips in powered craft, canoes and punts. There is a good bar/restaurant in the village (2km) and several more in the surrounding area. Futuroscope and Puy du Fou are each just over an hour away. Varied beaches (from very quiet to frenetic are within an hour-and-a-quarter, although all can be busy in July and August. There are several inland lakeside "beaches" and watersport facilities within half an hour. There is an extensive network of cycle/walking tracks, and several riding stables locally.

"An idylic, rural gem."
This out-of-the-way location was a real get away from it all. But the remoteness was compensated by the warmth of the hospitality, the generosity of our hosts, and rural France has so much to offer for those prepared to seek it out. The coast was only an hour away and medieval Towns are in abundance. Jane and Ian were exceptionally lovely hosts who couldn't do enough for us. Such lovely touches that a busy mum delights in, such as a home cooked meal on arrival! Use of their bikes was also a fabulous bonus. The pool was great fun and the gite was perfect for our needs (linen and towels to die for!) Would not hesitate in recommending this holiday destination to anyone with a love of France and sense of adventure!
Thanks so much for taking the time to send a review.. it really helps others when choosing a holiday venue... and last but not least ...so glad we could help you all have a great holiday ...so pleased you like our rural holiday gites...

"Charming in rural France"
Staying in "Le Jardin" (apparently was a piggery years ago, though you wouldn't know it!) we had a great week's stay in this charming and well appointed gite. Jane and Ian, the owners, looked after us very well with all the information and care needed. The property, whilst off the beaten track, is well connected for medieval towns, farmer's markets, restaurants and the sea, and being about one hour's drive from accessible airports eg La Rochelle. The resort Ile de Re, popular with french holidaymakers is about an hour by road.
Thanks so much for taking the trouble to write a review.... we really appreciate it...so glad we could help you have a wonderful holiday .... reviews make a real difference to potential visitors ...so thanks again for sharing your experience for the benefit of others
