Location description from owner

The Island of Malta region

The climate of Malta is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. During the summer months (May to September) there is little rain, and about 12 hours of sunshine daily. During the winter months it is mild with on average 5-6 hours of sunshine per day, meaning it is great to visit all year round.

A trip to Malta allows you to relax in a warm, friendly and centrally situated Mediterranean island, where the sea is crystal clear and the climate mild all the year round.

The island is small meaning it is easy to get around. Malta has something for everyone. From old historic cities with fascinating museums and medieval palaces to young and vibrant coastal towns where you can simply relax and soak up the sun or enjoy a variety of water sports, fishing and diving.

Malta is perhaps best known for its world heritage sites, most prominently the megalithic temples which are the oldest free-standing structures on Earth.

Valletta and Sliema are full of brand name shops where one can find anything that the heart desires. Open air markets in Malta are very popular. There is an open market practically every day. It is impossible to mention everything this gem of an Island has to offer; the Maltese people are renowned for their hospitality and friendship and are only too pleased to help if you require any assistance.

Birgu (Vittoriosa)

Vittoriosa is the oldest of the Three Cities and was the headquarters of the Knights of St John when they came to Malta in 1530. Having withstood the Great Siege of 1565, Vittoriosa became the seat of government in Malta, prior to Valletta being made the capital city.

Vittoriosa cannot help but captivate you as you meander through the myriad of wonderful ancient streets and houses. It is also home to a number of museums such as the Maritime Museum along the water front, the Inquisitor’s Palace and the Malta at War Museum. There are also occasional festivals and firework displays.

Vittoriosa, due to its historical charm and beauty, is a popular film location and some of the buildings have featured in films such as The Count of Monte Christo, Gladiator, and Troy. It is also an international marina hosting an increasing number of super yachts from all over the world that come to berth at Vittoriosa. Cruise liners gracefully glide into the Grand Harbour of Valletta which you can observe from the roof terrace of the house.

Along the harbour front and in Vittoriosa itself there are a number of restaurants, wine bars and cafes serving delicious Maltese cuisine including an array of freshly caught seafood to enjoy whilst in the idyllic surroundings of the Grand Harbour and the marina. There are also water taxi and boat trips available from outside maritime museum

“Brilliant time in real Maltese environment!”

Reviewed 3 Aug 2014

We spent a week at Templar House with our teenage son. We cannot fault the booking process, communication from the owner, or the property itself. Taxi arranged from the airport was very welcome. The house is exactly as described and has everything that you could possibly need. The location is ideal for the water ferry to Valletta, and we felt extremely safe wandering around the locality. There are some lovely eating places along the waterfront, and we felt that we really got to experience the real Malta. We spent every day exploring, whether on foot, by bus or boat - but returned each afternoon to sit on the roof terrace enjoying the late afternoon sun with simply stunning views! We would recommend the Malta at War Museum and organising any boat trips from the kiosk at Vittoriosa Waterfront.

“Truly Amazing”

Reviewed 26 Sep 2012

Highly recommend staying at this property; ideally situated away from the tourist areas of Malta, the views from the roof terrace were outstanding we were totally blown away and spent many many hours there. The locals were extremely friendly and only a short walk to the Marina and its many wonderful places to eat. We didnt have a car and were happy walking through the beautiful streets and alleys. Will return again the property had everything you could possible need and want and is decorated and furnished to a high standard.

“excellent location and wonderful house”

had a wonderful time staying at templar house. It's in a great location, excellent views of the harbour, only a couple minutes walk to some very nice restaurants. Very handy to shops to buy all the essentials. House has been renovated to a high specification everything has been provided for a comfortable stay. Lots of information provided on Malta, maps/visitor attractions which was very useful, all in all we had a lovely time and didn't want to return home.

“The Real Malta!”

Reviewed 23 Apr 2012

Templar House is a stunning property in a top location. Very well placed for all kinds of adventuring. Although the house is at the heart of a warm and friendly community in a maze of alleys and stone steps, it is completely secluded and absolutely quiet at night. Very private, very large and very comfortable with amazing views of Valletta & the Three Cities skyline. Forget the usual holiday areas of St Julians and Sliema etc. If you want to experience the real Malta this is the place for you. All essentials are on your doorstep & if you’re up for it the bus links Vittoriosa to Valletta & from there to anywhere on the island. And beyond! The nearest bus terminus (& site of Tuesday’s market) is at the entrance to Birgu a 5 minute walk away. Practically effortless. Sea taxis can be picked up at the entrance to the marina or across the water in Senglea. This is the grooviest way to reach Valletta & by far the most fun! Further afield, Mdina comes highly recommended. Miraculously preserved & as the information pack suggests, at its best at early evening. It truly is the silent city, utterly spectacular. Further still (and a cheap ferry crossing later) is Gozo. Well worth a trip and an absolute giggle. Back to TH & plenty of bars & restaurants within walking distance. We did not have a bad meal while we were there, in fact the only issue we had was actually finishing what we ordered (VERY generous portions). Whilst we were technically ‘out of season’ (March 2012) it was never difficult to find somewhere local to eat and drink. The prices were very reasonable considering the standard and quality of the food (and drink!) we were served. Templar House itself is faultless & on arrival we were made to feel v welcome thanks to Paul’s expert planning & attention to detail. The info pack is definitely worth a read (on the roof terrace with a bottle of wine!), v comprehensive & suitably well thought out. Malta is a very friendly, easy place to visit (think Channel Island spliced with your favourite Mediterranean bolt hole). The cultures that have washed across it over the millennia make for a laid back, cosmopolitan & historically rich escape with all the luxuries you would hope for on a well earned break. All in all we had a great time and couldn't recommend Templar House more highly. It’s a fantastic base for exploring Malta and a brilliant place to be.

“Beautiful house in historic environment”

Reviewed 14 Jan 2012

Paul, the owner, made all the arrangements very simple and straightforward, responding promptly to all e-mails. The property is a beautifully renovated and furnished 'house of character' - a phrase used by Maltese estate agents to indicate that the original building is a traditional block limestone build. The renovation has been done to a very high standard - and the decor is elegant and sympathetic to the age of the house. Templar House is in a neighbourhood of Malta where people live and work - not a typical tourist destination - but all the more pleasant for that. Vittoriosa - about 5 minutes walk from Templar House - includes a vibrant and glamorous marina, as well as a walled old town with many proudly Maltese restaurants as well as modern and elegant bars, wine bars and places to eat and relax. The view from the top of the house over the marina towards Senglea - with the outline of the church on the hill - is really spectacular. The house is wired for wi-fi but we were not able to set up - not critical, as we don't go on holiday to surf the net! We had an excellent week in the off season - many clear sunny days - and experienced Malta as a fascinating historic destination - and clearly a yachtie's heaven. The numerous marinas are evidence of this. The people are open, friendly and by their own description, laid back. It is the most photogenic place - with rich cream-coloured limestone wall everywhere - every angle is a National Geographic shot. Templar House will give you a wonderful base as a holiday and for exploration of the island - as bus and water taxi transport is cheap and accessible.

A lovely and traditional place to stay in the old capital.Well away from the main tourist centres but the buses and water taxis make everywhere easily accessible even without a car.Templar House is very spacious and contempory despite its historic origins and the view of the harbour from the roof terrace is wonderful.Paul is very efficient and eay to deal with so the experience is problem free.

“Perfect house in the perfect location”

Reviewed 26 Sep 2011

We (4 female friends) had a wonderful week at Templar House in September 2011. All the booking arrangements were straightforward, with the helpful owner, Paul Bainbridge, always quick to answer e-mail queries. We were met by a taxi at the airport (very welcome after a late night arrival) and helped by the taxi driver to carry our bags from the main road to the house. During our visit, the main road was dug up as part of the waterfront repaving scheme; I’m sure it will be lovely when finished. The house is stunning, finished to a high standard, and containing everything necessary for a comfortable stay. As the weather was very hot, we were grateful for the efficient air conditioning in the bedrooms and the lovely enclosed courtyard next to the kitchen where we had breakfast. The roof terrace with its great views of the harbour, was the perfect location to relax with a drink after a day of visiting the sights. The extra kitchen on the upper floor was very welcome, as was the sun room where we retreated on the couple of evenings when it was very windy. We loved being in Vittorioso which is a perfect location for a holiday. Although tourists visit to wander the picturesque alleyways and to eat at the waterfront restaurants, we felt we were the only tourists actually staying there. We ate every night in Vittorioso. There are more than enough restaurants within a 10 minute walk to enable you to eat somewhere different every day. We used the bus service a lot, but preferred the much quicker (but more expensive) water taxis to and from Valletta. One of the boat owners gave us his mobile number and we rang him from Valetta 10 minutes before we were ready to leave. All in all, we had a great holiday and couldn’t recommend Templar House highly enough.

Templar house is simply outstanding! My husband and I have just returned from a week’s stay at this fantastic property. The property itself is very private, very large and very comfortable and simply a delight to return to after a day’s sightseeing. Its location is in one of the many small alley ways in Bormla. Whilst entering and leaving we always stopped and chatted with the locals who were all happy to give advice and directions or simply just chat and pass the time of day! The new bus system is now in place and the nearest bus terminus is at the entrance to Birgu… only a 5 minute walk away. We purchased a 7 day ticket from the driver for 12 euros each… which enables you to travel all over the island on any bus for free during this period! The bus no’s 2 & 3 takes you into Valetta… where you can even catch a bus to the airport at the end of your stay (no. X 4). The taxi transfer went very smoothly so we arranged for the same company to collect us from the property for the return journey… no problems at all and the return fare was a standard 18 euros. The sea taxies can be picked up at the entrance to the marina or on the other side at Senglea. We used these many times to travel to Valetta. Amongst the new Valetta waterfront restaurants is a Hard Rock Café… always a treat especially if you’re a teenager! We walked all around the local area of The Three Cities; Senglea, Vittoriosa & Cospicua. We easily found Kalkara Creek, Fort Rinella and the local beach of Rinella Bay. The local market is on a Tuesday and can be found starting at the bus terminus (entrance to Birgu). It just so happened that the Birgu festa was taking place when we arrived so all the streets were decked out with flags and statues etc. The local bands were playing and the fireworks were outstanding! We sampled most of the locals restaurants surrounding the marina but our favourite soon became Del Borgo with its huge selections of wines and platters down in cellars under the historical city of Birgu. It was a very charming experience to spend our time with the lovely and very friendly Maltese people and experience their way of life but to stay at Templar House made it all the more special! We shall certainly be returning!

“Wonderful house,excellent location-PERFECT!”

We stayed at Templar House Aug 2011 (Myself, husband and 3 children 16,14 and 12).The house has been beautifully renovated and is very well equipped and comfortable for self-catering.It is clean and well furnished and during a 2 week stay we had a maid come in to clean and change bedding and towels. The owner, Paul, was helpful and always at the end of the phone/e-mail to answer any questions promptly. We were greeted at the airport by a lovely taxi driver who took us to the house and gave us a guided tour of the area before carrying our cases up to the house. On arrival we received a welcome pack of bread, butter, milk, crisps, coffee, biscuits and wine which was very nice.It was all these little touches which added to the holiday which we have never had before when staying in other places. Our favourite part of the house was the roof terrace-we started and ended every day there.Coffee on a morning and bottle of wine on an evening-the view over Vittoriosa marina is breathtaking. The house itself is ideally placed for exploring Malta as is a stone's throw away from a bus stop to Valletta (where the main bus station is) and yet it is in a lovely non-tourist place where you are living with the locals and experiencing the real Malta. Local restaurants and wine bars are fantastic, the people are friendly, kind and welcoming and to sum up I can honestly say that out of all the places we have visited wether it be Europe,Carribean or the USA it is one of the most fantastic holidays we have had. 10 out of 10 for Templar House. We would highly recommend and will most definitely be back!
