Description from manager

Description

This gorgeous, recently restored fisherman?s home is located in the harbour of a beautiful fishing village, famous for its centuries-old fishing tradition. Fishermen set out in their wooden fishing boats right in front of the house, and return a few hours later laden with John Dory, sea bass, monkfish, sardines and lobster! Last time I was there they told me that they teach fishing to the rest of the world! The house is surrounded by similar quaint dwellings and narrow pedestrian streets, markets, cafes and fresh fish restaurants. It is hidden behind a stone wall, and a gate leads you to a secluded courtyard, paved with the local stone and decorated with plant pots. Just as in the olden days, the ground floor of the villa is a wine cellar, and an outdoor stone staircase leads to the two upper floors, connected with an indoor wooden staircase. This villa is situated in a pedestrian zone, and a car space is reserved for it 100 metres away from the villa.

Location description from manager

The Dalmatia region

Split, the main port for travel to the Adriatic islands, is also home to the Diocletian Palace, built by the Roman Emperor Diocletian at the end of the third century AD. The Palace forms the core of the old town and has been adapted and remodelled throughout the ages so that it displays a breath-taking mix of architecture from the Roman through to the later Venetian period.

Vis

Vis is the most distant from the mainland of the larger Croatian islands and until the 1980s was not open to foreigners as it was an important military base. As a consequence it was relatively late to develop a tourist industry and even today is relatively undeveloped and less frequented by tourists. Vis is however on of the most exquisite Croatian islands. It has two principal towns, the town of Vis at the north east end of the island and Komiza to the west. The interior is rugged and dominated by the 587 metre high peak of Hum. The coast includes many delightful bays and beaches.

There is evidence of a stone age settlement on Vis and the Greeks established a colony there in 397 BC. Control of the island later passed to the Romans and for much of the middle ages the island was under Venetian control. In the 19th century Vis became part of the Austrian empire and the town of Vis was an important naval base. During the Second World War Vis was the command centre for the Tito's partisans and the cave, on a remote hillside in which Tito lived, can be visited.

Some first rate wines are produced on Vis. The red Plavac and the white Vugava should be tried.
