Location description from manager

The Occitanie region

Mas Rouby is perfectly positioned between the Mediterranean to the east where the beautiful sandy beaches provide long days by the sea, and the Pyrenees mountains to the west, which offer a wealth of walking and cycling opportunities, not to mention skiing in the winter!!

This region is a delight; the Conflent valley provides lush green scenery, with Mount Canigou dominating the skyline and the Pyrenees visible in the distance. You can be swimming in the sea in the morning and hiking in the mountains in the afternoon. There are even thermal springs, so if you would like to combine the two activities together we suggest a hike or a morning skiing followed by a soothing thermal swim in the mountain thermal baths.

There is a lake in the local village of Vinça, with beaches from which you can swim, hire pedalos, wind-surf or sail.

Weather:We benefit from being in the sunniest region of France and enjoy warm sunny weather from March all the way through to October. November and December are cooler but still with sunshine. January, February and March are great skiing months (45 minute drive to the ski resorts).

Vinca

Joch is a medieval hill village through which mountain streams run alongside it's flower filled cobbled streets. It is also a "Village Fleurie", with many beautiful walks and hikes in the surrounding countryside which offer outstanding views of the olive groves and orchards of the Têt Valley. Springtime is stunning when there are fields and fields of peach trees and cherry trees all in bloom, creating a fantastic pink carpet to the Conflent valley.

Mas Rouby offers an excellent base for touring the area and many places of interest. Just a few sites of interest within easy driving distance:-

Lovely sandy beaches and old fishing ports such as Collioure, on the Mediterranean Sea, are within easy reach (approx. 55 mins) .

There are numerous Abbeys, Monasteries and Cathar Castles to explore as well as the UNESCO World Heritage site of Villefranche de Conflent just 20 mins away.

'Le Petit Train Jaune' (The Little Yellow Train) will transport you up in to the high Pyrenees; a magnificent feat of engineering with tunnels and bridges all along the route.

For art lovers a visit to the Museum of Modern Art in Céret that boasts works by Matisse, Picasso and Chagall among others, is a must.

Prades (13km) hosts the international Pablo Casals Music Festival annually in the town and the surrounding villages. Prades holds weekly markets; a large one on Tuesdays and a smaller farmers produce market on Saturdays.

Vinça (3 km) has a swimming lake with beach (there are lifeguards in attendance in July and August). There are picnic areas, a small snack bar/restaurant, pedalo hire and a children's play area too. You will also find all local amenities - bars, restaurants, boulangeries, chemist, bank/ATM and various shops.

A Championship golf course is available at St.Cyprien and there are fabulous walks all around the area. Step out of the front door and you are in the countryside.

Marquixanes, Adventure Park with climbing high in the trees, zip wires, cargo nets, tubing and much more.

Casteil, Animal Park spread over a valley-side, around a beautiful walk; great for a family day out.

Market day is every day here in this part of France, ask for a list of markets.

If you want to travel a little further afield Spain is only 40 minutes from Joch where you can visit Girona, Barcelona and the seaside resorts of the Costa Brava.

Carcassonne is well worth a visit; a medieval fairy tale walled cité, steeped in history and a great place to shop.

Finally, don't forget to leave time for some wine tasting at one of the numerous vineyards (the one in Joch produces excellent organic wine).
