Location description from owner

The Nouvelle-Aquitaine region

The property is within a short drive of some of the most beautiful villages, vineyards and historic sites in South West France. Sprinkled amongst the breathtaking countryside, blanketed with sunflowers in the summer, are numerous ancient hilltop villages, linked by delightfully unspoilt country lanes. The principal towns of Bergerac and Villenueve-sur-Lot are within easy driving distance.

Saint-Etienne-de-Villereal

The property is located in rolling, open countryside near the village of Montaut (0.7miles), between Castillonnès (4miles) and Villeréal (5miles), where all amenities including supermarket, shops, café bars and restaurants can be found

There are many places of historical interest well worth a visit. The local 13th century Bastide towns of Eymet, Issigeac, Monflanquin, Monpazier, Miramont-en-Guyenne, Villereal and beautiful villages of Lauzun, Issigiac, Pujols and Penne d’Agenais are all withhin an easy drive.

Delightful local markets exist in the villages all around (Villeréal Saturday, Castillonnès Tuesday, Issigeac Sunday, Monflanquin and Monpazier Thursday) , night markets, ‘Bodegas’ (night music festivals), medieval fetes and horse chariot racing

Vineyards are plentiful in the region because of its long hot summers e.g. the stunning Chateau Monbazillac and other Bergerac appellations are within an easy 20 minute drive with a friendly staff enjoyable tasting, or ‘degustation’, guaranteed at the end.

Bergerac is about 34 km north, and Villeneuve-Sur-Lot 30 km to the south. Both these larger towns have good shopping facilities, superb restaurants and weekly street markets.

There is great swimming in the nearby lake in Lougratte (4km). This lake has a small beach, pedalos, canoes etc and is very popular. You can picnic on the grass or under the trees.

There is golf available 15 minutes away at the 18 hole championship course of Villeneuve-sur-Lot (which is actually at Castelnaud) with its stunning clubhouse. There is also a 9 hole course at Tombeboeuf, which is 20 minutes away and an 18 hole course at the magnificent Chateau Vigiers, 30 minutes away.

Tennis may be played at St Vivien, 4km away.

There is a wonderful old cinema in Castillonnès showing English language versions of recent films.

The Dordogne River (about half an hour’s drive) is very good for fishing, canoeing and other activities. There are also many local facilities for riding and walking.

There are many interesting places to visit a little further afield e.g. the renowned prehistoric sites in the eastern Dordogne (e.g. cave paintings at Lascaux). There are also the very pretty towns of Sarlat, Domme and Roque Gageac.

The surf beaches of the Atlantic coast are within an hour and a half, and the mountain scenery of the Pyrenees is two and a half hours away.

“Great Family Holiday For All Previous Guests.”

Reviewed 22 Feb 2017

I am the caretaker for the property. The first review is not accurate and contains many misleading statements and in some cases actual lies.. As the lady says they arrived late so I was not able to do the meet and greet as panned but was about to visit on Sunday when the tenant called to complain, mainly about the cleanliness. Suffice to say I said I would come over immediately and resolve the issues. She said dont bother we are leaving! I asked for her to send photos, she agreed. I gave her my email address and she wrote it down, I know that for a fact as she asked for time to get pen and paper. So she does have my email address and could have sent me the photos! Whilst there is some merit to some of her claims they are grossly exaggerated and in contrast to the many guests who have enjoyed fabulous holidays before and many with repeat bookings year after year. Without writing a book this is my take on what happened. 1) Prior to the guest arrival one of their friends, who lives locally, delivered a food parcel and wine etc. mid Saturday afternoon. This was whilst my team was cleaning the pool and the property, cutting the grass etc. So the tenants have friends locally. 2) Also I think that not all the planned guest arrived so the numbers were smaller. 3) Hence, the opportunity arose to stay with the friend or friends of friend. I say that because how else could a family find somewhere else to holiday for two week in about 4 hours. I say 4 hours because they did not arrive until 10;30 pm and left the next day before Midday!! In conclusion, I think the tenants constructed a scenario to try and get their money back. In essence making a fraudulent claim.

“Poor quality, shabby and not clean enough.”

Reviewed 24 Oct 2016

I could make this review very long and detailed, however, I have decided to be brief and to the point. We left after one night, I believe that says it all really. We arrived about 10.30 after a very long day, so didn't really have chance to look around properly, first impressions were not good. The main bedroom is on the ground floor, its so small we couldn't get our cases in to open them, the bed is a very cheap Ikea type that is virtually on the floor and has seen many better days, and this is the case for the rest of the property. Its very cheaply furnished and its a long time since it was decorated or had any new carpets or furniture. The cleanliness is not up to standard, lots of cobwebs (old ones!!), food still in the freezer from previous tenants, food debris on the floor. the downstairs loo wasn't clean (I cleaned it and it came cleaner so not just old limescale or something), the upstairs loo smelled of urine. The bedroom furniture was broken, and the sheets were marked/stained. The pool was grim, no evidence of cleaning, the sun loungers were stained with sweat and the pool cover was sagging, the fencing was on its last legs. I contacted the caretaker and spoke to his wife, neither offered to come and try to put things right (it would have taken a moth anyway!!). upon return I contacted the owner, who obviously realises there is nothing we can do, and just refuted my claims, and said the caretaker would have sorted things out (he didn't offer) and that the last people had a lovely time! However, he wouldn't give me his personal email address so I could send him the photos, so we wasted the best part of £3,500. Tripadvisor/holiday lettings were no better, I would advise you to read the small print. I have many photos to back up my claims but I can't really be bothered to put them up, just don't go to this shabby, dirty, poorly maintained property. I have never ever felt the need to write a review before and I really hope that this deters other people from going to this place and maybe even spur the owner in to doing some much needed maintenance. Having read back my review, it really doesn't convey just how awful this property is, WE LEFT AFTER ONE NIGHT!!!! Enough said

Owner's reply: There are always areas to be addressed in any rural property through wear and tear etc., but our manager could have quickly fixed the items mentioned if he had been given the chance. The guests who had just left loved it, so I find it difficult to understand how the same property could have changed so much.
