Location description from owner

The Nouvelle-Aquitaine region

Villereal is on the Dordogne border with Lot et Garonne. It makes an excellent centre to explore both Departments.

To the north there is the valley of the Dordogne with world famous ancient archaeological sites and riverside towns clinging to the walls of the river gorges. River cruising and river fishing are regular activities.

To the south are the mediaeval Bastide towns, the softer looking ancient towns of the Lot river, and many, many castles and Chateaux. To mention a few, Biron puts in an excellent son et lumiere show in summer, and others host opera, plays and the odd rock concert.

This is a great wine growing region - the Bordeaux is close (try visiting the ancient centre one day), and of course Bordeaux reds cannot be beaten. Less know (and closer) are the vignobles of Bergerac.

Whereas Lot et Garonne is famous for its fruits - especially plums (prunes). The cottage is a renovated and converted "plummery".

There is a local street market every day in one or other of the very local Bastide towns. And local produce (from foie gras and wine through to cheese and vegetables) are excellent.

No real need to mention the climate. it is warm in spring and autumn and hot in summer. Just right for that outside BBQ and bottle of local wine or juice after a busy day seeing the sights.

Whether you are after a quiet time walking or cycling the country roads, or are busy off seeing things, you will thoroughly enjoy your time in this beautiful part of France.

Villereal

Villereal, just a couple of kms from The Cottage, is a 12th Century Bastide town, and a focus of the local agricultural community. It has ancient grandeur along with a local market town presence. It's Saturday market (and Wednesday in summer) is worth the visit just to be part of it. The bars, cafe's and eating establishments around the town square are well worth visiting to watch the world go by with an excellent coffee, glass of wine or something from the plat du jour.

The area surrounding Villereal is rural (the Cottage is located on an 17 acre international alpaca farm), and from The Cottage there are walks and rides through the countryside, or along the quiet rural roads.

All country activities (bicycles, horse riding, fishing, golf etc) are close by, and for town life Bergerac and Villeneuve sur Lot are each 20 minutes away. Both with ancient picturesque town centres but with the trappings of modern living if you wish that.

Also close are a lot of other Bastide towns (including the famous Monpazier with the excellent Bastide Museum). And more castles and chateaus than you would imagine.

The little village of Born (where The Cottage is) is a tight cluster of ancient houses, and is a "village bonne fleurie". The locals take pride in their little village.

Villereal hosts the local supermarket, and a petrol station along with other more general stores.
