The Aquitaine region
Set in the heart of the bastide villages. A very historical region.England controlled this region during the Hundred Years War and many of the local villages were built by the English in the 13th and 14th centuries(depending on which side of the river Dordogne you stand).Bring your cameras as this is a region of real historic value. There are chateaux in abundance Chateux Biron only 15 mins away (entrance fee 8 euro's- 2012 adult price). Activities include Horse riding,Golf,Swimming,Fishing,Hiking,Cycling- also at the local Hippodrome is Horse trotting in August for a fun night out.During the summer the local bastides take it in turns to have a carnival night,( Bodega),(eat, drink and be merry).
Tourliac is a hamlet situated between the 13th century bastide (fortified) villages of Villereal(french) and Monpazier(english).15 mins away is the 1000 year old Chateux Biron which is well worth a look (open Feb until Oct). There is market at Villereal on saturdays and a farmers market on wednesdays(in the summer). If you are a horsey person there is horse riding nearby and weekly meetings of horse trotting at Villereal stadium(in the summer). At Monpazier there is a medieval week in August (jousting, sword fighting etc). A short walk from the gite is a large lake/ nature reserve (fishing allowed).Antique markets abound in the local bastides in the summer time.
All in all a great place to holiday.

"Best holiday I can remember"
We really fell on our feet with this holiday. Kind and thoughtful owners who did everything possible to make our arrival and stay smooth so that we could just get on with our holiday from day 1. We were greeted by Steve who led us to the property, showed us around and kindly gave us a welcome pack of essentials just in case we hadn't time to go shopping which I thought was very thoughtful. The garden is about 1/2 an acre and lovely, there were lots of games for our daughter to play and plum trees which we made the best of. The pool was well maintained and very clean and because the weather was so hot it we spent most of our holiday in or near it. We didn't spend much time inside the gite apart from sleeping but the dinning room and lounge were tastefully decorated and comfortable and there was also a nice wood fire which would be a great focus point in cooler weather. We were told in advance that there would be "everything needed for our holiday" and there really was to the extent there were even hair straighteners and a hair dryer in every room. With most Gites we've stayed at you generally will get what other guests have left behind so you might get some things but not others but we literally couldn't think of anything that we needed which meant the next day we only had to do a quick food shop and sit back and relax. The Gite is nicely secluded and the gardens or pool aren't overlooked. It's easy to go for a walk up local lanes and is situated in a really nice area with a lake nearby and of course several Bastides which are within driving distance. There was lots of wildlife to see as well. In summary the owners made every effort to make sure our stay was a great one. They were both helpful and thoughtful towards us but never intrusive and this really made the holiday. This part of France is my favourite and we've been several times but this was by far the best holiday ever.
