Location description from owner

The Basse-Normandie region

Villedieu is a prosperous old market town set in very pretty countryside close to the coast of La Manche at Granville. The weather is very similar to the south west of england but if anything slightly softer. The countryside is very lush, full of old apple trees and grazing cows and then sheep grazing on the salt marshes nearer the coast. Excellent wide sandy beaches within half an hours drive around Granville which has one of the largest fishing ports in France as well as a modern marina and local ferry to the Channel Islands. The area is full of history going back to the pilgrims way to Mont St Michel, the local copper and pewter trade and of course the Landing Beaches from the Second World War.

Villedieu-les-Poeles

Villedieu is well served with small museums celebrating the copper and pewter trade for which the town is justly famous. This trade goes back to the time of the Crusades and is celebrated with a four yearly festival which takes over the center of town in mid-June. To coincide with this there is a festival of flowers two years later. Several golf courses within easy reach and riding stables towards the coast. A family Zoo at Champrepus

“An extremely comfortable and well appointed house in a superb location”

Reviewed 5 Dec 2011

We have stayed in this house twice and thoroughly enjoyed each visit. It is an easy and short drive from the ferry terminal in Cherbourg. The town is a charming market town with all the everyday shops and a weekly market. It also has other special features of interest such a bell foundry and racecourse and other sports facilities (eg golf) are close by. The sea and many other towns which are well worth a visit are only a very short distance away. The town has a railway station with good services. The house is very homely and contains everything that you could possibly want in a holiday house. The owners are extremely helpful and in the event of a problem arisisng during your stay you can be sure to receive all the assistance you need to resolve the situation. Superb value for money.

“Property and town of Villdieu are excellent”

Reviewed 29 Nov 2011

Our family first stayed at this house in 2009 and we returned again with confidence in 2011. It is not a holiday home, it is a second home for the owners who take care to keep it in very good condition indeed with it appears, regular maintenance both in and outside, I would have no hesitation in recommending this to close friends. There is at this time no useable garage for a car ( what property in the centre of any old French town does?), unloading is OK outside in this quiet road, and road parking is safe about 50 to 60 yards away in the one way rue d'ecole. Villedieu is a lovely place to stay with many shops and eating places, A Casino supermarket is on the close outskirts and the area is very attractive and, as an active cyclist, it is a delight but hard riding.
