The Tuscany region
The Tuscan Region of Italy is well known for its warm balmy summers, beautiful countryside, rolling hills, mouth - watering food, and of course its towns and villages, rich with mediaeval architecture…
The Garfagnana region of Tuscany, often known as its ‘Green Lung’ is situated away from the milling crowds that can often be found at the most famous Tuscan locations and is totally unspoilt, remaining untouched by tourism.
The scenery is spectacular, green and mountainous with views of both the Apuane and Appenine mountains at every turn…And, due to the altitude whilst the weather can be very hot, it is always pleasantly cool for sleeping…
The food is usually home made, using home grown produce, and is typically simple and extremely tasty. Prices here remain very reasonable due to the fact that food is prepared with the locals, and not tourists in mind…The local wine is cheap and surprisingly drinkable!
The pace of life is slow and peaceful – spend your days enjoying secluded picnics, swimming in rivers, or watching locals play bocce or ‘cheese throwing’. Visit hundreds of ancient hill top villages, or relax at home basking in stunning scenery.
For ‘townie’ days, visit the mediaeval towns of Barga, Lucca, Castelnuovo, with Pisa and Florence within easy reach too…
This is Olde Worlde Italy
The little village of Villa Collemandina close by has a baker, butcher, chemist, café, post office, and doctor's surgery as well as a restaurant. There is picnic area near the “Lago di Villa” lake in Villa Collemandina, which provides trout for fishing and beautiful walks along its shores.
Just 5 minutes drive away is Pontecosi village with its pretty lake, churches, traditional houses also has a café/village shop right on the shores of the lake, which not only stocks basic groceries but which sells ice cream and a small but tasty selection of reasonably priced hot and cold snacks.
The lake is a haven for wild birds and is also a good fishing venue. There is a traditional Italian bowling (bocce) alley and a small children’s play park.
The medieval market town of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana (8km away) lies in the heart of the Garfagnana, as this stretch of the fertile valley of the Serchio, flanked by the Apuan Alps to the west and Apennines to the east, is known. The district provides a range of sporting activities and promotes folk, agricultural and cultural events.
Castelnuovo train station is on the main Pisa/Lucca to Aulla line and there is a bus station with good links to the surrounding area.
The ski slopes of Il Casone are about 15 minutes away. The coast (Forte dei Marmi), the enchanting fishing villages of the Cinque Terre, and excellent ski resort of Abetone are about 1 hour away by car (in opposite directions!) Gracious Lucca and Pisa airport are about 1 hour and 1.5 hours away respectively.

"Amazing location and amazing holiday"
After along day of travelling with young children (aged 2 - 11) we were over the moon to arrive at our property and discover it was everything we has hoped for. A warm friendly greeting from the owners made us feel truly welcome. The house was perfect though it did lack storage space for food in the kitchen especially as there were 8 of us. The beautiful Tuscan charm of the house was definitely something special. Good points: Great location Pool amazing and perfect for the children. Plenty of space, And great base for visiting the Tuscan country side and towns. Bad points: Lack of a bath was a problem when your 2 year old is scared of the shower A regular cleaning service would have been nice and meant that my friend and I could have relaxed and enjoyed our holiday more The pump on the pool broke half way through the holiday which whilst we could still use the pool, it did need a lot of cleaning by us to try keep it reasonably clean for the children to use. All in all though, it was a truly amazing holiday and would most definitely return in the future and recommend it to others.

Beautiful quite village, surrounded by breath taking views. A car is essential as there is not any public transport, but it s easy to get about by car ( not any traffic). Visiting Pisa and Florence about 2 hours away, is a must. The owners are very lovely people and ready to help. They go the extra mile for you. They helped my friend organise a church blessing for our silver wedding anniversary in the village. Good time was had by all .

"Fantastic Family Fun"
We knew we had arrived somewhere special as soon as we descended the winding hill road down to the villa. The hosts were there to meet us with a really warm welcome and they did everything they could to help us settle in and plan for our stay. The villa has some of the best views you could wish for. All the rooms were very well appointed, spacious and the whole house very homely and comfortable. Kitchen was spacious with an eating area, lots of crockery and cooking utensils and equipment. We would have liked a bit more food storage space, being 8 people for two weeks stay we had a lot of shopping to find a home for. Also a large coffee pot would be good, we did LOTS of refilling of the two smaller ones. The pool and gardens were lovely, perfect place to lose yourself in those views! We shopped in the local, friendly store as well as local towns, wonderful quality and great prices. We ate out at simple local restaurants for some of the tastiest salamis, cheeses, vegetables, pasta etc. Just what we were hoping for. We ventured a little further afield with a day trip to Pisa (hour and a half) and Florence (two hours), both spectacular and definitely worth the trip. Our holiday was all we had hoped for and MORE, would definitely recommend Rustico Altana, we'd go back in a heart beat!
