The Algarve region

The Algarve, Portugal, is a famous holiday destination popular with those seeking lots of sunshine and award winning golden sandy beaches, families, sports enthusiasts and nature lovers
For holidaymakers from around the world that fly into Faro Airport or drive or sail from other parts of Europe each year, it's the promise of sun-drenched days at the beach, sharing in a lovely relaxed and welcoming family-orientated culture and endless options for dining out and things to do, for all ages! Not to mention the award winning golf courses for those golfing fanatics. However the Algarve should also be known for it's truly unique contrast between the golden coastline and the beautiful rural countryside, it's many historic attractions and thousands of species of flora and fauna, making it the perfect holiday destination for interests such as photography, painting, nature watching, walking and other outdoor pursuits.
The beautiful sandy beaches are, of course, one of the major attractions for the Algarve (and understandably too, because they are some of the best in the world, with Blue Flag awards to prove it!) but as our Algarve tourist information shows, this sunny southern region of Portugal offers so much more as well! The fantastic weather that delivers dry sunny days for most of the year, makes enjoying outdoor life a way of life. The Algarve is perfect for walking, sightseeing and cycling and for all the sports you can imagine – surfing, golf, tennis, horse riding, kayaking and even extreme sports such as kitesurfing, rock climbing and wakeboarding. Families can enjoy water parks, theme parks and zoos, boat trips along the breath-taking coastline (with dinghy rides into the caves and 'grottos' and the opportunity to see dolphins too), crazy golf, karting and many other things to do in the Algarve!
The Algarve is only a less than 3 hour flight from the United Kingdom, Ireland and many other parts of Europe and flights arrive to the region's sole international airport, Faro Airport (in central Algarve). Faro flights arrive daily throughout the year, with several arrivals and departures each day from airlines during the busiest summer months of July to September. There are also direct flights from Toronto in Canada to Faro in the winter.

Vilamoura

For a real taste of Algarve luxury, Vilamoura is a must-see place to visit or to holiday! It is the biggest private tourism resort in Europe and is one of the most prestigious in Portugal.
Vilamoura has something for everyone to enjoy - there are boat trips (for those of us who don’t own a boat!), specially designed trails for walking and cycling and restaurants and bars to suit all tastes and budgets.
Vilamoura marina is the main centre of activity with a huge range of restaurants, bars and shops (including many designer shops). Luis Figo's 'Bar Sete' (bar seven) is also on the marina front. During the day, although it can get quite busy, it's really a very peaceful area to stroll around. It gets more lively at night, with everyone coming to eat and try out some of the bars, but is still a very relaxed resort.
Boasting a 1,000-berth marina, Vilamoura attracts the wealthy, yachtsmen, golfers, celebrities and in fact, anyone who just fancies enjoying a rather nice place in the sun!
Golfing in Vilamoura has become world famous, and if you like golf, you will be pleased to know that there are several championship golf courses (all requiring handicap certificates by the way).
For anyone who simply likes to go to the beach to relax, Vilamoura has two beautiful beaches, Praia da Marina ('Vilamoura Beach'), to the east of the marina and Praia da Falésia to the west. If you enjoy a walk, Praia da Falésia runs all the way to Olhos d' Àgua or stroll along Praia da Marina into Quarteira.
For those who enjoy water sport/activities, there is the famous Aquashow Water Park which is one of the top waterparks in Europe. It has the biggest water coaster, not to mention top swing, white fall, aquafly, shows and space centre. Aquashow is less than 10 mins away by car from Vilamoura. There are regular transportation and taxi services.
There is also Vilamoura Casino, which has regular evening entertainment, such as shows and dances, as well as the gaming rooms.
Vilamoura is a great place to stay whether you just want to enjoy the beaches, play a few rounds of golf, have a game or two of tennis, try something more adventurous like parasailing or maybe take a 'champagne cruise' to celebrate a special occasion!
The well known Zoomarine and Slides & Splash are within 30 mins by car which also offer endless entertainment for both adults and children.
The Old Village is probably one of the most tranquil settings in Vilamoura, nestling within the Pinhal golf course but yet close to the centre of Vilamoura its fine beaches and the 5 golf courses of Vilamoura. It is centrally located in Vilamoura and is only a 10-15 minute walk from the shops, bars and restaurants at the Vilamoura Marina. Vilamoura’s beaches are also close by, and are only 5-10 minutes away in a car or taxi.
The Old Village has three swimming pools, children’s play area, coffee shops, supermarket, restaurants and bars. It is an ideal location for a relaxing holiday and very suitable and safe for families.
There are security men patrolling the area regularly.
