Location description from owner

The Algarve region

Interesting facts about the Algarve...
* The Algarve is located at the western end of Europe, in southern Portugal.
* 200 kilometers of sandy beaches (Praias) and crystalline waters
* 3000 sun hours per year
* Excellent climate and warm hospitality
* The Algarve is a melting pot of various cultures where these influences can be seen in the architecture of its houses. Look out for the chimney pots!
* Henry the Navigator established an important school of navigation in Sagres and made Lagos a ship building centre. From here the Portuguese brought the 'New Worlds' to the 'New World'.

Out and about......
* Travelling through the region you will see orange, carob, fig, olive and almond groves. Watch out for the
Portuguese ladies selling oranges by the roadside!
* Local gypsy markets and shops scattered throughout the Algarve selling Algarvian handicrafts such as:
ceramics, bedspreads, reed weaved baskets, stained glass to name but a few.
* The Algarve’s golf courses are among the best in the world.
* If you enjoy fish and shellfish the Algarve is the place to be, with locally caught sardines or try the main recipe of the Algarve's cuisine 'ameijoas na cataplana' (clams cooked in a speacial cataplan pot).
* Various cultural and musical festivals take place throughout the year from the famous Almond Blossom carnival parade in Loule in February to numerous sporting events to the sardine festivals in June/July and National Folklore festival throughtout the region in August.

Things to do....
* A region with such a large oceanfront it's not surprising to find so many water sports from paragliding to dingy sailing to scuba diving to marlin fishing: and there are various aquaparks throughout the region.
* Explore the inland and mountain terrain on a jeep safari, take a bike ride or follow a walking trail in Monchique.
* If you prefer culture or history then try: Sagres, Cape St,Vincent and Aljezur in the west or Tavira Island and Alcoutim in the east.
* Take a trip east to Spain and visit Saville.
Therefore, with a vast range of options for activities and entertainment, the Algarve is unique and has the ability to satisfy different needs and expectations. That is why the Algarve has become one of the main destinations of Europe.
