Vogue-Why Porto, Portugal, Is Europe’s Next Hot Spot

A European tiled-roof seaside locale isn’t exactly a difficult sell. But Porto, Portugal’s second largest city, is finally getting a little more (long deserved) attention. Steeped in history, Lisbon’s little sister is a now a haven for the design and food obsessed. You should absolutely stop by the old stock exchange and take note of the beautiful bridges, but perhaps the most exciting part of the city is the way much of the architecture and design blends traditional taste with contemporary innovation. And, fortunately, the same can be said for Porto’s serious foodie scene. So for those planning a summer getaway, look east-Porto is the first and last Atlantic destination you should see.

Vila Nova de Gaia

European Best Destinations - Best beaches

Miramar is a small seaside village near the towns of Gulpilhares and Arcozelo, in the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia, in the subregion of Greater Porto, Portugal (Grande Porto). It is an upmarket residential area south of the river Douro, most known for its beach - Praia de Miramar (Miramar Beach) – and the small chapel called Senhor da Pedra (Lord of the Rock), which forms the central attraction of a yearly festival. Along the beach there are several cafés ("esplanadas"). During the warm summer months, many Portuguese from the surrounding areas of Porto, Gaia and Espinho spend their days at the beach of Miramar, and also at neighbouring beaches of the Costa Verde.
