The French Riviera - Cote d'Azur region
This beautiful region at the south-east corner of France stretches from the Italian border in the East to Marseille in the West and from the French Alps in the north down to the Mediterranean sea. It offers a diverse landscape of beautiful countryside, vine covered hills, forests, medieval villages, historic sites, lakes, mountains, spectacular scenery and famous beach resorts. Some of the most well-known places in this region, which can all be reached for a day out are:-
Nice, Antibes, St Paul de Vence, Cannes, Monaco, Italy, Grasse, Aix en Provence, St Tropez, Le lavandou, Cassis, Arles, Nimes, The Camargue, Marseille etc. At the heart of this region is The Var, which starts near Grasse and stretches almost to Aix en Provence. It is known as one of the sunniest regions and the greenest departement in France with thousands of hectares of beautiful countryside, olive groves, wooded hills and 300km of shoreline on the Mediterranean sea.
The Var’s coastal villages and towns include Port Grimaud, Ste Maxime, St Tropez, Le Lavandou, and the Isles d’Hyeres. The Var is also a wine-making region with approx. 90,000 acres of vineyards producing the light and delicious Rose wine for which this area is famous. The Var is full of charming historic villages, unspoilt countryside, lakes and mountains but also lively coastal towns offering every form of entertainment. The Corniche des Maures, thought by many to be the most beautiful and unspoiled coastline on the Cote d’Azur starts just west of St Tropez along the Var coast from Le Rayol-Canadel to Le Lavandou.. Further west along the coast is the pretty coastal town of Cassis, with stunning sea views from the mountain road above, an unforgettable spot for a picnic, after which you can take the winding coast road to Marseille and visit its famous port.
Further Inland, the stunning Gorges de Verdon, the largest Grand Canyon in Europe, is a great day out, you can drive around it enjoying spectacular scenery along the way or stop to take a canoe trip down the canyon or on the lakes. The mountains of Haut Provence and the lower Alps are just over an hour’s drive, again with spectacular scenery in spring, summer, autumn or winter.
Vidauban dates from Roman times and is today a wine-making town surrounded by 12 local vineyards, all of whom offer wine tastings and sell ‘ en vrac’. Situated 35 minutes inland from the sea, 40 minutes south of the mountains, and 50 minutes from Nice airport, it is literally in the centre of the Var making it a perfect base from which to explore and visit everywhere of interest.
The village has a large range of local shops and every facility you might need, including english-speaking doctor and dentist. The main square is still the centre of village life with its open air cafe’s and restaurants, shops and summer concerts and dances in the pedestrianised centre. Larger supermarkets are also available within 10-15 minutes drive at Les Arcs, Le Luc, Trans en Provence and Draguignan. Vidauban is bordered to the south by the beautiful Plaine des Maures, a national nature reserve , the perfect place to go for long quiet walks to discover the rare flora, fauna and birdlife and to take a picnic. Drive through the Plaine des Maures and its acres of vines to the hilltop village of La Garde Freinet, then from there down towards the sea at the Bay of St Tropez. This is the ‘quiet’ route to the sea, through the vineyards, even in the tourist season when the main roads are busy!
Due to its central location Vidauban is the perfect base from which to enjoy your holiday.
Some of the places you might want to visit are listed here :-
• Lorgues, Les Arcs, Le Thoronet, Tourtour, Flayosc, Salernes, Cotignac : all within 10 – 20 minutes drive.
• Grasse, 40 minutes, visit the perfume centres and the flower fields

• Nice : 50 minutes : explore the old town of Nice, the flower market or restaurants.
• Grimaud, Port Grimaud and Sainte-Maxime : – 35 minutes drive.

"A wonderful tranquil setting"
We had a fantastic lazy time at Le Mas de Oliviers. Carole and Edwin, the owners made us extremely welcome with wonderful attention to detail and comfort and their local knowledge was outstanding with fabulous ideas for excursions, if you could drag yourself away! The close proximity of Monaco, Nice and even Italy, with it's lovely markets, is a real bonus. We loved Vidauban and of course the wonderful rosé wine that we bought from the local vineyards and enjoyed immensely! There's some lovely cafés and restaurants in the pretty village square and the Sunday market was a great Provençal experience. Having said all that, we were always drawn back to the beautifully kept pool, terrace and gardens!

"Simply the Best!!!"
We stayed here in June 2013 and had a really wonderful time. The owners are very welcoming and helpful and we felt at home from the moment we arrived. Firstly, the studio itself is very clean, there's lots and lots of storage space so you can really unpack everything and forget your suitcase which is often not the case. The bathroom is a good size with an enormous shower and again lots of storage space for all your lotions and potions. The kitchen is very well equipped and not only is there an oven and hob, but a full size fridge and a small freezer plus a microwave, kettle, plenty of plates, glasses, cutlery, cooking untensils etc. We used the Plancha/Grill most evenings though and cooked outside or by the pool. The pool itself is really beautiful and clean with mosaic tiles and is so lovely when lit up at night too.....the gardens are full of colourful shrubs and flowers, it's so picturesque....a lovely calm, peaceful and tranquil place. We loved it so much at the studio it was difficult to go out in fact!! However, it is ideally situated for travelling down to the coast or exploring the wonderful provencale villages in the vicinity....the motorway is just a few minutes away too. We were very sad to leave and can't wait to go back. And we loved the plancha so much we have bought one ourselves. Very highly recommended!!

"Wonderful in every way!"
We had such a wonderful time, the accommodation was exactly as described. It was clean and homely! The pool was so well looked after, beautiful to sit beside and extremely clean. Carole and Edwin are such lovely people, they made us feel so welcome and were so helpful with knowledge of the area too. We will be going back for a return visit, we loved it so much.

We stayed in this studio for a week at the end of September 2012 at the recommendation of friends who'd waxed lyrical about it. And boy, were they right. This beautifully maintained mas sits in very pretty grounds and is situated in a lovely, quiet valley just outside Vidauban. The excellent boulangerie and the nearest cafe are still only two minutes away, though! The hosts are a lovely couple who leave you to yourself, and they could not be more pleasant and warm when you need anything or want advice on where the best food and wine is to be had, or simply want a little chat. The studio is beautifully done, with plenty of storage space for your clothes and sufficient kitchen space as well. The bathroom is lovely. You have your own little terrace right outside the French doors, and there you can sit of an evening with your glass of wine listening to the cigales. Heavenly. The pool is beautiful and large enough to actually swim in. None of your oversized bathtubs here. Peace and quiet reign in this slice of utter heaven. We'll definitely go back this year!
