The Tuscany region
The rural enclave in northwest Tuscany known as the Garfagnana, has to be one of Italy's best-kept secrets. The Garfagnana is within reach of the Tuscan gems of Lucca, Pisa and Florence, but its appeal lies more in its isolation, its lack of tourism and its striking scenery. This area of outstanding natural beauty and matchless hospitality nestles between two distinct mountain ranges, the spectacular jagged ‘marble mountains’ of the Alpi Apuane and the rolling ‘spine of Italy’, the Apennines.
You can choose between two way of spending your holiday: to stay relaxed in the peace of the country or do a lot of activities as trekking, mountain bike, excursions in mountain, tours to caves or natural parks.
The local cuisine can be enjoyed at reasonable prices in the numerous restaurants of the area.
A visit to Lucca, the historical, walled main town of the province could be made in half a day.
Recommended full day trips include Pisa and Florence.

"Paradise - well worth the hair-raising drive up the mountain!"
We wondered why David insisted on meeting us in the nearest town and then we drove up the mountain - I knew it was remote but was not expecting it to be quite so high up. But once we settled in, the amazing mountain surroundings just blow you away. La Capanne is in the most beautiful setting and the property itself has everything you need. We were worried our girls (7 and 4) would get bored but they just loved being in the pool all day, playing in the lovely gardens and feeding the resident cat, Giacomo (when he wasn't finding his own lizards to eat!) David would arrive every morning to look after the gardens and every other day, bringing fresh bread or pastries to his guests. Being a good 20 mins down the mountain to the hypermarket in Gallicano, fresh bread was very welcome. David is a great host - he knows his property and his area very well and is always on the end of the phone to answer any queries. Not that we had any really - everything was perfect. Only unexpected thing to point out really is are that we had scorpions (yes real scorpions!) in the apartment but they are apparently not dangerous (like a bee sting) but still need to be aware and check beds and shoes before you use them! A bit scary if, like me, you had never seen them before! The Garfagnana area has loads of gorgeous villages and towns to explore if you want to, or go mountain hiking, cycling (yes mad cyclists up the mountains if you like that sort of thing) or, like us, just soak in the amazing views from the pool every day. We did visit the local Grotto del Vento caves which were amazing and the cool caves were a welcome relief from the heat for a morning! Don't really want to say much more - I feel I shouldn't have said anything at all because that means more and more people will come to stay here and we will not get in again but then again, how can we keep this a secret? - its beautiful so come and see for yourself.

"Favourite place in the whole world!"
What can I say…our first trip to Capanne was in 2005 and we have only missed one year since then! We count the weeks from one year to the next! Why you might ask? Well where do I start: the weather is lovely; one expects that but the real reasons are the scenery, the walks, the pool; it must be seen to be believed; the fact that the location is “real Italy”; rustic, local high quality food in abundance both to use in self-catering and also in the local restaurants. There is also David and his family; fantastic hosts. Welcoming, generous (the morning pastries are a real treat) and attentive. If you lead a busy life and want to really escape from it all for a break that will refresh and one that will stick in the memory (and if you are like us come back) then Capanne is for you. It really is that good! The Emery Family Northern Ireland

"Wonderful ‘getaway from it all’ location, fantastic host, in the centre of north Tuscany."
For those who are looking for a fantastic location, peace and quiet with the opportunity to see nature at its best, this is the place for you. The accommodation has a homely feel with a well presented garden/grounds and a clean pool. The views from the grounds/pool are breathtaking and relaxing. If you want to venture around the area a car is essential. David is a super host, supportive and informative without being over the top, he has a clear passion for making sure guests enjoy the holiday as much as possible. Highly recommended. We stayed early in May and were lucky enough to see nightly displays by ‘firefly’s’ which we will never forget, magical stuff, apparently they are about from April to June, a real bonus.
