The Midi-Pyrénées region
A fairytale kingdom; a land dotted with spectacular castles, such as Najac, Penne and Brunequel; magical pre-historical grottos; atmospheric Churches and Abbeys like Albi, Conques, Moissac and Beaulieu (just 4 kilometres from the house).
Medieval "bastide" towns tower above the surrounding countryside such as Cordes, Rocamadour and St-Cirq-Lapopie. The breathtaking rivers of the Tarn and Averyon ribbon their way through the valley gorges.
The regions rich artistic heritage celebrates Goya in Castres, Ingres in Montauban and Toulouse-Lautrec in Albi.
The region receives more than 2000 sunshine hours per year making it one of the sunniest places in France. Thus vegitation is lush and verdant: open rolling hillsides give way to green sunflower filled pastureland and cool shaded woodland.
Verfeil is a tranquil, friendly village of about 300. It has a 17c. church,a boulangerie/patisserie, providing freshly-baked bread and pastries ,a tennis and boule court,a children's playground and a football pitch;all sports equipment is in the house.
An excellent bistro/bar with an English- speaking owner, a post office, garage and tourist information/library/ internet facility is open daily.
A wide range of walks in picturesque surroundings lead directly from the house; from a gentle 45 minute circuit, through to more challenging full days for the very keen hiker (picnics can be provided).Backpacks and maps are provided. Tennis, boules and table tennis equipment is also available.
Caylus, Parisot and St. Antonin offer either lakes for pedalos and fishing and / or swimming pools. A dip in the river is always popular too.Canoeing is extremely popular on the Averyon with half and full day hire available from numerous venues.
Tree assault courses, horse riding,pot-holing,rock-climbing,cycling,paint-balling,and a par3,9-hole golf course are all within easy reach of the house. An 18-hole course is available inAlbi as well as a huge outdoor water theme park;a smaller one is located near Cordes.
Opportunities for pilates, yoga, french lessons cookery classes and painting can also be organised for guests.
Daily, colourful, bustling makets are a delight ;the largest being St Antonin and Villefranche,( architecturally stunning towns),and are held on Sundays and Thursdays.
Restaurants in St Antonin cater for every purse and palate ;our local bistro and other 'auberges' in the near vicinity serve excellent traditional country cuisine;3-5 courses, with wine, range from 11 -15 euros. English films are shown regularly.
Verfeil has a famous music festival held in August. Every other village has its own arts event throughout the Summer.

"A pearl of France with history and outdoor life in your neighbourhood."
The house felt like a real home with a lot of personal touch from the owners. Lots of space and literally all kind of necessary tools both side and outside. Clean and tidy. The advantage of the atmosphere which belongs to an originally old house, but at the same time the modernisation gives the necessary comfort. Very nice details in many rooms, especially the bathroom upstairs. (And the computer was very popular with our son!) The outside area is very nice. A perfect place to relax amidst lots of nice flowers, and you can both here and see the locals passing by. But not many of them, it is a small hamlet. The atmosphere of the hamlet is also very peaceful. Nice combined bakery/small grocery 3 minutes walk away, and the restaurant just 1 minute away was a surprise. Good food, and the owners take good care of you, in english if you like. However, a car is absolutely recommended as there are so many nice villages, small towns and sceneries to experience. Just a short drive away you will find them, some of them really pearls of France. And lots of local markets. And good possibillities of canoeing. The house owners seems to be the perfect hosts, it was a pleasure to meet them, and they know the area very well and can give you valuable advice on where to go. All in all, this is a gem for those who prefer a peaceful and comfortable holiday, if you prefer to holiday in the shopping streets in Paris or London, this is nothing for you! Knut, Norway
We thoroughly enjoyed meeting you and we are so pleased to have shared some of the wonderful attractions of the area with you; our evening at the outdoor concert/dinner in Varen was especially memorable. I hope we meet up again sometime, Best wishes, Chris and Bob

"A beautiful place to relax in and explore."
A beautiful house of generous proportions in a lovely village. Ideal for relaxing but with plenty of places to visit. The surrounding area is very pretty and the Gorge is spectacular. The market day in nearby St Antonin is amazing and colorful and well worth a visit. For the more adventurous, canoeing from St Antonin is a definite must. Something to suit everyone and highly recommended.
Thank you for your enthusiastic response to our house and region! Your planned return speaks volumes about the magnetic 'pull' of the area once seen...

"A beautiful tranquil place to stay - a little bit of heaven!"
The house is in a beautiful village in exquisite walking country. It is within an hour and a half of two airports and the journeys from both have been hassle free. There is a wonderful boulangerie and bistro in a village so you can stock up from products from many local markets and then relax in your French home, with fresh bread on the doorstep. There are many lovely places to visit in the area - action packed if you want it - like tree climbing and canoeing, table tennis, cycling (bikes available in the house) and hiking or take in the ambience of cafes and restaurants in picturesque, stunning scenery. The house has every amenity you could want and is warm and welcoming. Something to suit all ages and inclinations!
You had an action-packed holiday and certainly have seen the beauty of the area from a variety of modes of transport! The villagers were in awe of your fitness levels... Many thanks for your enthusiastic review.

"Fantastic Experience, Wonderful Home!!"
My family (children 6 & 16) stayed for a week in June. The house was perfect for us. Everything we needed was readily available and it absolutely oozed with charm throughout. There was plenty of room for all of us and more. The house is full of lovely furnishings and touches of whimsy. The courtyard was perfect for the kids and adults alike. I tell you, nothing was better than dining al fresco in that courtyard after St. Antonin market day. Rotisserie chicken & pasta, salami and cheese, fresh fruits & vegetables and wine. Ah, some of the best memories ever! We absolutely loved the location. It was easy to get to larger towns and cities for day trips. Yet always wonderful to come back at the end of the day to Verfeil, and take a walk at sunset or simply relax and enjoy a glass of wine. The town itself is small and extremely quaint. There is one lovely restaurant that we frequented, and keep in touch with the staff through email. Also nice little shop for essentials within walking distance with yummy croissants! The children had their pain au chocolate nearly every day. Nearby there is plenty to do for everyone. Very picturesque countryside and villages. I can't tell you how many photos I took! And the kayaking is a must for visitors. Gorgeous scenery! If I could've stayed there forever, I surely would have! We will be back as often as possible. Thank you for making our stay so memorable!
Thank you so much for your kind comments. We too, continue to be charmed by the friendly local people, are still in awe at the stunning countryside and historic picturesque local bastide villages. The local bistro owners still talk animatedly about your much-enjoyed presence in the village. We hope to meet you personally when you return.
