The Andalucia region
Andalucía is perfect for beach holidays, sightseeing and exploring. Olive groves, citrus trees, mountains, white sandy beaches, they're all here. Discover tiny villages tucked away in the mountains with pretty little churches and monasteries. Laze on the beach away from the madding crowd, relax in the bars and restaurants or have tapas in the village square. It's your choice. There is night life if you want it, or if you prefer, a stroll along the beach at sunset followed by a glass of wine in the cool of the evening.
At Fiesta time, mix with the locals as they parade through the streets in colourful costumes, bands playing. Every little village comes alive, sometimes solemn, sometimes joyful, as at Easter when they perform rituals going back hundreds of years.
Historically this part of Spain was occupied by the Moors and ample evidence remains of this period. The Alcazaba at Almeria is well worth a visit, sitting high above the town overlooking the sea. A bit further afield is the amazing Alhambra Palace at Granada, a sight not to be missed.
Strike out on your own and discover what this magical region has to offer. You'll love it!
Palomares is a small rural village, set amongst the watermelon fields and close to the beach, but within easy reach of everything you could need. The village centre has bars and restaurants, shops and most of the usual amenities, like hairdressers, banks and a pharmacy. Larger supermarkets, with ample parking are a short drive away. The village plaza is a meeting place where locals and visitors mingle for tapas and a quiet drink.
Despite being a quiet, rural village, Palomares has plenty of attractions within easy reach. just a few kilometres down the coast road you'll find the AQUAPARK, beloved of all children and most adults too, open from April until September. A little further away, on the road to Los Gallardos you'll find a KARTING TRACK where you can live out your F1 fantasies.
Are you a golfer? Ten minutes drive away is the delightful DESERT SPRINGS GOLF RESORT, with its hacienda style club house, set in beautiful grounds. Even if you're not a golfer you can enjoy a relaxing drink on the terrace, followed by a first class meal in "El Torrente" restaurant.
Just a mile or so from Palomares, the village of Villaricos is well worth a visit. Bars and restaurants line its streets, and are thronged each Sunday by the locals and visitors to the street market. Boat trips are available from the two marinas and the quiet beach is excellent for a dip in the warm sea.
A little further along the coast, which is dotted with pretty little coves, is the beautiful sandy beach at San Juan de Terreros with its long esplanade, excellent restaurants, a fitness area and ample free parking . The little castle on the hill is also worth a visit.
A bit closer, about seven or eight Kilometres in the opposite direction lies Garrucha, a bustling port where fishing boats bring in there catch. Its "Paseo Maritimo" is thronged every evening with local people taking a stroll with their children and filling the excellent seafood restaurants. The long sandy beach has a lifeguard and bathing is safe never crowded
The resort of Mojacar Playa stretches south along the coast from the edge of Garrucha. Miles of safe sandy beaches, with shops, restaurants, pubs, night clubs, and camel rides for the adventurous. Mojacar Pueblo, from where the beach takes its name, is set up on the mountain a mile or two inland. The Pueblo is a beautiful reminder of the narrow alleyways of old Spain and the views from the town square are spectacular. Live music is a regular feature of the town's night life. Mojacar Pueblo is not to be missed.
So there you have it. I'm sure that you'll find something I've missed. Drive off into the mountains like we did and discover the beautiful Vergen del Saliente Monastry, looking out across the valley. Go inland and stumble upon tiny villages in the hills like Uleila del Campo. (There's a picture of its pretty church in the apartment.) Drive back down the dried up river bed to Albox. Pretend to be a cowboy in the Wild West for a day at Fort Bravo near Sorbas. Or, you could just soak up the sun on the beach with a good book, the choice is yours.
