The Languedoc-Roussillon region
Ventenac - en - Minervois was created during the building of the Canal du Midi in the 1600's by Paul-Pierre Riquet. The area is now vineyards, and there is a Chateau which produces and sells the local wine, either by the bottle, or by Cubi (this is a plastic container which is taken to the Chateau for filling). The cost is around 5euros for 3 litres, they have white rose or red. Ventenac also has 2 bar/restaurants a boloungerie and post office.Le Somail is reached along the footpath and is a centre for boat hire. You can hire by the day. There is also a very large bookshop here which is well worth a visit. In the opposite direction along the Canal footpath is Paraza where bike hire is available - either by the day/s or week. The first bridge to carry a canal over water is within easy walking distance.
There are 2 beaches within easy driving distance, Narbonne Plage and Guissan Plage which take about 40 mins to get there (a bit longer at peak times). There is plenty to do here for children, Aqualand and go-carting being two of them. The nearest town is Lezignan, where there is a vibrant market every Wednesday morning. Narbonne also has a refurbished Market Hall (les Halles) which is open every morning for most food supplies. There is also a more general market every Thursday. Carcassonne, Minerve, and La Grasse are all within easy driving distance. Further afield is Colliure and Perpignan.

"A fantastic fortnight in a beautiful part of France"
We stayed in Villa Minervois for 2 weeks and had a fantastic time. The villa was comfortably furnished with a nice open plan downstairs opening out on to our own private pool on one side and the canal du midi on the other (both with gated access with was perfect with our three children) The village was lovely with its own boulangerie at the side of the canal. It also has its own restaurant by the canal which cooked great food and was very reasonable. There was also a fantastic artisan cafe which had homemade ice cream in Ventenac. The restaurants in the surrounding villages were excellent and there was a very informative visitors book which gave us a good guide as to the best places to eat. The property was looked after by a couple who lived locally and were very helpful as to where to find and do things. There is a good selection of beaches nearby, in particular at Gruissan. There was so much to see and do in our fortnights holiday and we hope to go back to this villa soon.
