Location description from owner

The Goa region

Goa is a small state on the western coast of India. Even though it is the smallest of all Indian states it has played a very noteworthy role in Indian history.

The people of Goa are very friendly and tremendously happy-go-lucky. They are fond of the good things in life and are certainly not caught up in the rat race. Siesta is an important part of life in Goa. Though the people of Goa are of different faiths and from different cultural backgrounds, they have come together to create the easygoing Goa culture with its emphasis on good living.

The cuisine of Goa has an interesting mix of influences from all the cultures that it came into contact with. There are two separate traditions in cuisine influenced by the respective religions of Hinduism and Christianity; there are some meeting points that present interesting harmony. One of the most popular dishes, the pork Vindaloo is a result of this beautiful harmony. The fruits of the sea are used lavishly in Goan food; different types of fish, prawns, mussels, oysters, crabs and many more.

Festival time in Goa leaves you with your senses reeling - in more ways than you can imagine for the Goans' celebrate any occasion with great passion. They actually have a festival that celebrates the very idea of fun and fiesta! Goans enjoy going out and it is not unusual to find families out for a night of cheerfulness. Almost every third house has a bar-cum-restaurant.

Weather in Goa is pleasant, the tiny Indian state of Goa enjoys a tropical climate, with its warm sunny weather playing a huge part in the regions' successful tourist industry. Thanks to its location next to the Arabian Sea, Goa sees warm and temperate coastal weather year-round, ideal for enjoying the beaches! The monsoon season brings a dramatic change in conditions, however, and runs for four months of the year. The period between November to March is the best time to visit Goa, with temperatures averaging between 21-31°C, and the days filled with blue skies and plenty of sunshine. April and May, the two months leading up to the monsoon, are humid, with soaring temperatures sometimes reaching above 35°C. The monsoon season starts in June and runs through to September, bringing much needed relief from the high temperatures.

Goa is a completely entertaining place, offering something to everybody. There are beach sports, casinos, rave parties, river cruises, grand shopping arcades and water sports to indulge in apart from exotic beach resorts, spectacular coral reefs and rich marine life to explore.

Cansaulim

South Goa is the ideal place if you are looking for a peaceful holiday with a laid-back pace. Some of the finest beaches in the region skirt the coast. It is here that you will find some of the best seafood cuisine in Goa.

Our ground floor apartment is part of the 'Queeny Meadows' complex with a beautifully maintained shared garden located in Arossim, South Goa. South Goa is a much more laid back compared to North Goa. Less hassle, less noise, less people = more relaxation!! However if you fancy visiting North Goa it's easily accessible by taxi or bus.

Airport transfers can be arranged for you, with our friend & local licensed taxi driver Phillip. He can collect you from the airport & take you to our apartment in an air conditioned car with plenty of room for your luggage! This will cost approximately Rs.500/ which you can pay him on arrival.

It may be handy for you to keep him as your taxi driver throughout your stay in Goa as his rates are very reasonable. Alternatively the nearest bike/scooter/taxi hire is 1 km walk from the apartment. If you would like to hire a scooter you will need an international driving license. This seems to be the preferred transport method in Goa for locals & tourists as it is very independent & cheap!

The nearest market is a 700 meter walk where you will find supermarkets, ATM, money exchange, tea stalls, samosa stalls, fast food & a real insight into local life & you can walk to the nearest beach ( 1km) this is Arossim Beach. Arossim sits in the middle of a 25 kilometre stretch of soft sandy beach, backed by coconut palms. There is a beach shack called 'Starfish' which serves the best prawn biryani I have ever tasted!

Further along the beach you will find the resorts Hyatt, Royal Orchid & Majorda Beach if you take a stroll here there are many more shacks & lots of water sports activities such as surfing, snorkelling, jet-skiing, boogie boarding, scuba diving, water-skiing, para-sailing, windsurfing and deep sea fishing.

Below is a list of attractions in Goa & the distances from our apartment:

Colva Beach - 9km - Lots of Restaurants, emporiums, water sports

Margao Market - 12km - Shopping at the colourful local market displaying exotic products ranging from cosmopolitan department stores and designer boutiques to makeshift stalls. Margao is one of the most enjoyable moments in Goa, selling spices, bangles, jewellery, clothes.

Rivel Sal - 20 km - Take a cruise along the river - the sunset cruise is perfect for those who want to explore the rich surroundings of River Sal. The area is teeming with birds and the trip is ideal for bird-lovers, or just to see the beauty of River Sal and local villagers going about in small canoes.

Tropical spice plantation- 28 km - The spice plantations of Goa are quite popular as a tourist attraction. On a typical excursion to the spice plantations, you shall begin your day by starting to explore the fields and the farms. It is very astonishing to see men climbing on very tall trees while maintaining a balance and at the same time plucking betel nut fruits from those swaying trees. While you are here you get the chance to ride elephants or if you don't fancy that you can wash the elephants!

The Dudhsagar waterfalls - 64 km - Located near the Goa-Karnataka border. They can be reached easily by hiring a taxi, catching a train from Cansaulim station or taking a bus from Margao. Dudhsagar waterfalls of Goa have the distinction of being ranked as the fifth highest waterfall in India and they list in the Top 100 highest waterfalls in the world. The Dudhsagar waterfalls plunge down from a staggering height of 2000 feet. The waterfall is located amongst lush green surroundings of the forests. During monsoons the Dudhsagar waterfall becomes very lively and attracts tourists in hordes. Many tourists who visit Dudh Sagar at Goa prefer swimming in the calm waters. It is quite safe to swim there provided one is careful enough. Those who love adventure and thrill can always try to climb to the head of the waterfalls though the rough path full of rocks, vegetation and water. You will need a whole day for this trip but it will definitely be worth it!

Church of St Francis - 25 km - A stunning and charming building, the Church of St. Francis of Assisi is located in Old Goa,

Panaji - 27 km - Goas' Capital city, you can go on a luxurious casino anchored in the Mandovi River overlooking the charming city of Panjim.

Vintage car museum - 8km - Ashvek Vintage World is a Vintage Car Museum situated in Nuvem. It is Goa's first and only vintage car museum that showcases over a dozen vintage cars sourced from Goa or neighbouring areas like Kholapur, Belgam and Sawantwadi.

Arpora night market - 37 km - The night market in Arpora, also known as The Saturday Night Market Bazaar is the largest shopping and entertainment event, which reflects the cosmopolitan and distinctive culture of Goa state in the best way. This event happens only during the high tourist season on a large fenced area between the Arpora and Anjuna city resorts. The first season night market is usually arranged before the New Year, while the last one is organized at the end of April (the business hours: from 4:00 p.m till 11:00 p.m).

“Amazing value for money comfortable apartment with everything you need”

Reviewed 19 May 2013

We loved this place, close to the airport so no long taxi journey after flight. Cansaulim village within walking distance had little supermarket, chemist, bank, takeaway and the most delicious samosas I have ever tasted bought from a stall by train station. The beach was the most amazing though, mile after mile of unspoilt sand and palm trees with only the local fishermen sometimes as company. There is a beach shack as well for delicious prawn biryani! Apartment is clean, well equipped and very comfortable apart from the bed which to be honest is not 5 star but this is India after all and the location and everything else more than makes up for it.
