The Andalucia region
Walking - With numerous walks within the Los Velez area, ranging in experience from the beginner, a lovely place to start would be the short walk from the Botanical Gardens in Maria to the experienced mountain walker who could enjoy 6/8 hour hikes or a 4/5 hour hike with some climbing to the summit of La Muela in Velez Blanco.
Cycling - Cycling is a huge sport in Spain and this area offers cyclists some extraordinary challenges as well as amazing views en route.
Bird Watching - Unusually for the otherwise arid and barren mountain ranges in Almeria, the Sierra is clothed in extensive pine forests and Mediterranean woodland, some of the best preserved in the province. It supports a varied flora with nearly half of all plant species in Almeria province found here, including some unique to the Sierra.
Similarly diverse is the park's fauna, with over 100 bird species, including 17 species of birds of prey; in 2002 it was declared a special protection zone for birds. Its butterfly population is also outstanding and includes a subspecies of the butterfly parnassius apollo, which can only be found in this Sierra, and the pseudochazara hipolyte, endemic to southeast Spain. The spur-thighed tortoise that inhabits this Sierra is in danger of extinction and there is a breeding centre for these tortoises in the north of the park at Las Alnohallas.
Horse Riding - A short distance away we can offer superb riding with Rancho Luz Del Sol, www.rancholuzdelsol.com in Partaloa near Albox.
Swimming - During July and August the village pool is open 10am to 8pm daily, it is a superb facility with an olympic size pool and several childrens pools with slides and pool toys, a traditional cafe and restaurant and the perfect grass areas underneath large trees keeping you cool are perfect for afternoon picnics.
Beach - There are numerous beaches to visit within a 45 minute drive from quiet off road beaches to water parks and bustling beach front towns, all are available to visit all year round.
No. 7 Jose Marin is situated in the heart of the small agricultural town of Vélez Rubio, It is in a picturesque setting, surrounded by sierras, olive groves and fields of wheat. The tourist office is located in the local museum on Calle Carrera del Carmen 29 and open from Monday-Friday 10am-2pm & 5-8pm,
The museum is situated within a beautiful 18th century hospital 'Hospital Real' and has a fascinating exhibit of artifacts and ceramics dating from prehistoric to Moorish times, including a section on the ancient cave paintings in this area.
However, the main monument of note in the town is the magnificent Baroque Church of La Encarnación which can be found on the plaza of the same name. Built in the 18th century, this has an imposing carved facade which includes the arms of the Marquises of Villafranca y Vélez, who built it. Inside, the main altar has a superbly detailed, 20-metre-high carved wood retablo

We found the property to be in a good location in which to enjoy Rubio's amenities, the property itself was clean and comfortable and we found the owner helpful and flexible in our arrival. As well as being in a good location for the town we also spent many afternoons walking in the parque nacional located just outside of Maria ( a neighbouring village about 15 mins drive away) which was very peaceful with beautiful scenery, and with a very handy bar located in the car park in which to enjoy a well earned drink after the walk .

"Lovely Christmas break"
We recently travelled to Velez Rubio and stayed at 7 Jose Marin for three nights. The booking of the accommodation and communication with the owner was all very good. We are already familiar with the town and wanted to see what the area had to offer in the winter. The house is excellently placed in the middle of the town, which is the main reason why we chose to stay there. The main bedroom is very comfortable and had heating so was very warm. The rest of the house is well equipped and the roof terrace is a lovely spot to catch the sun!
