The Basse-Normandie region
Normandy, and especially Calvados, is steeped in over a thousand years of history – from the birth of William the Conqueror at Falaise and his subsequent invasion of England in 1066 to the D-Day landings in 1944. Cathedrals, castles, chateaux, monasteries and churches contribute to an impressive architectural heritage, while artists through the ages have been inspired by the region's unique light.
The Channel ports of Honfleur and Port en Bessin, as well as Granville on the Atlantic coast – each of which are about an hour's drive from the house – are delights to the palates of those who love seafood and fish.
The smaller towns and villages in the area almost all offer weekly markets bursting with local delicacies such as cider, Calvados brandy, and cheese and other dairy products. Caen, the region's capital, and Bayeux are both bustling cities with a multitude of museums and venues for the arts. Many of the tourist attractions throughout Normandy offer visitor and family discounts. The heart of the Suisse Normande at Clecy is home to a plethora of outdoor activities from water sports to rock climbing to paragliding.
The nearest town is Vassy, which has local shops (including a supermarket, butcher, baker and pharmacy) and two bars/cafes. It is about five minutes drive away. The nearest large town is Conde-sur-Noireau, which is about a 15-minute drive away, while a 20-25 minute drive takes you to Vire (an historic market town boasting an array of shops, bars, restaurants, a swimming pool supermarkets/hypermarkets and a tourist information centre) or Flers (a bustling city with large hypermarkets).
The whole of the Vire/Vassy area, like the rest of Calvados, is wonderful walking country and a treat for bird watchers/nature lovers. The nearby scenic Suisse Normande region contains a plethora of outdoor activities, including kayaking, pedal boating, rock climbing, abseiling and paragliding.
Within easy reach are two zoos, the chateau and park at Pontécoulant, the D-Day Landing and Atlantic coast beaches, and Mont St Michel, as well as Bayeux, Falaise and the dramatic scenery around Mortain and in the Suisse Normande.

"A charming rural retreat."
L'Aunay is a charming house in a quiet rural setting. We had a fantastic week there. The pretty small town of Vassy is only a 5 minute drive away, and for a wider range of shops, it only takes about 25 minutes to get to Vire. A car is really essential for this house, with many well known attractions an easy drive away. The rooms were all clean, spacious and well kept, with the kitchen very well equipped for making the most of the local produce. There are plenty of nice touches such as iPod docking stations and of course the magnificent fireplace. There is plenty of outdoor space too and the terrace is a beautiful spot to enjoy a drink in the evening. All in all a superb holiday rental we were very sad to leave.
