The Midi-Pyrénées region
The Midi-Pyrénées is the largest region in metropolitan France, in terms of surface area, and equal largest in terms of the number of departments covered. It incorporates eight departments, which are Ariège (09), Aveyron (12), Haute-Garonne (31), Gers (32), Lot (46), Hautes-Pyrénées (65), Tarn (81) and Tarn-et-Garonne (82). The region covers a total surface area of 45,348 km², making it larger than either Belgium or Switzerland; and stretching some 400 kilometres from north-east to south-west.
The city of Toulouse, lying more or less in the centre of the region, is by far the biggest city. Although this is the largest region in France, over a third of the entire population live in the Toulouse urban area, and the Haute Garonne department, surrounding Toulouse, accounts for well over 40% of the regional population. The region's second largest urban area, surrounding the city of Tarbes, capital of the Hautes Pyrenees department, is ten times smaller than the Toulouse urban area. The only other towns with a population of over 40,000 are Montauban, Albi and Castres. Foix is the capital of the Ariège and is the last major French city before entering the principality of Andorra.
The Midi Pyrenées receives more than 2,000 sunshine hours a year and is by the way one of the sunniest place in France. The region is renowned for its warm and pleasant climate throughout the year, especially during the Summer months when peaks of temperatures can be observed.
Foix serves as an excellent base from which to explore the local area, rich in cultural and historic sites and perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. The cobbled streets provides a medieval setting for a stroll and invite you to stop at one of the many bars or restaurants along the way. Loubens, where the gites are located, is only 10 minutes away by car.
Foix Castle was built on top of a rocky outcrop dominating the town below and the mountains stretching behind. It was strategically positioned to defend the nearby river, the existing town and access to the valley stretching south into the Pyrenees mountain range.
Nowadays, Foix serves as an excellent base from which to explore the local area, rich in cultural and historic sites. These vary from some of the most significant prehistoric cave systems to be discovered in the world, fascinating Cathar castles at Foix, Roquefixade and Montsegur through to the numerous renowned local markets such as those at Foix and at Mirepoix.
With its narrow cobbled streets in the old centre with their fountains, half timbered houses, squares and ninth century abbey, Foix provides a wonderful French medieval setting for a stroll and to stop at one of the bars or restaurants along the way.
