Location description from owner

The Dordogne region

The whole year is mild in Aquitaine. The 2,200 sunshine hours per year make the region similar to the Mediterranean. Along with rainfall that is well distributed over the year, this sunshine is one of the elements which favour vine-growing in AquitaineJust a short distance away from Vanxains there is the little (remove the word ‘little’ as you say the town is quite large below) town of Riberac which is renowned for its Friday market – the best in the area and well worth a visit. There are canoes for hire on the river at Riberac. The town is quite large with several good supermarkets, banks, cafes and lots of shops. The Tourist Information centre in Riberac square is one of the biggest in the area giving lots of information of the many interesting places to visit in the Dordogne.A short drive from Riberac there is the medieval town of Brantome where it is a delight to walk around the remarkable and ancient abbey founded by Charlemagne (742-814). With its soaring campanile this is one of the most elegant medieval and Renaissance buildings in the Dordogne, complete with the caves used by the monks as kitchens and cellars. The town sits on a bend of the river Dronne and a stroll along the riverside is an unforgettable experience. Lots of brilliant restaurants complete the experience – you will come back. There are also boats trips available.About 10 km down the river you come to the pretty village of Bourdeilles where there are two chateaux of different periods built on a fortified hill – a medieval fortress (13th – 14th century) and a Renaissance palace (16th century) with a remarkable collection of furniture. On the river Dronne you can rent a canoe. Not very far away is the village of Villars and a short distance north of the town are the caves with some impressive stalactites and paintings more than 17,000 years old. It was discovered in 1953 and is the largest underground network in the Perigord. The underground river has hollowed out huge chambers connected to each other by galleries. Entrance about €7.50 including a commentary. Brilliant - not to be missed.Nearby is the Chateau de Puyguilhem in a village of the same name. It is a fascinating structure way out in the woods a Renaissance masterpiece that fell into disrepair but was carefully restored after WW2 . It contains some superb Aubasson tapestries and fine furniture and several fireplaces that are carved with exceptional beauty.Going a little way east from Vanxains (about 10km) just over the Charente border is Aubeterre sur Dronne. Its charming narrow streets wind through white stone houses and ancient buildings. Built in the shape of an amphitheatre this former stronghold is classified as one of France’s prettiest villages. The square and side streets are home to coffee shops, restaurants, art & craft shops (with the beautiful work being produced by the artists living on site). The most outstanding and impressive monument in Aubeterrre is the underground monolithic church of St John. Carved entirely out of rock the main naïve reaches a height of 20 m. There is fishing and beaches at La Jemaye just down the road. La Jemaye is a large lake with sandy beaches, pedaloes, canoes, horse riding, picnic areas, a cafe etc. The above is just a few of the many attractions in the area. Come and see!!

Vanxains

Within 8 kms at the village of Saint Severin there is a pleasant outdoor café and shops. Just a little further on about 7 kms at Bertric-Burre there is a superb restaurant specialising in fish Excellent supermarkets – Leclerc & Intermarche - in Riberac, 10 mins away. Verteillac, 25 mins away, also has an excellent bakery, large general store, Bank and cash machine and delightful cafes. Be sure to pay a visit to the Cafe du Commerce - serving the best 'Croque Monsieur' we have ever tasted. Bar le Calice serves a very good plat du jour Mon - Fri (about €8) as well as a selection of other dishes. There is also a bank and a cash machine. At Lisle, about 10 mins away, you will find a few small shops and bars and there is usually a Tuesday morning market selling a variety of fresh produce. Lisle also has a doctor and a pharmacy. Many places of interest are a short distance away and full details and pictures There is a golf course at Pillac about 5km away. If you a real professional you need to go to Perigueux about 30 klms away –a first class 18 hole courseThere is also an excellent Information Folder in the house covering Safety Procedures, ideas for eating out, supermarkets, market days and places to visit.

“Fantastic Holiday”

Reviewed 30 Jul 2013

A superb gite in a great location. The gite was everything we hoped for and more. We both felt so at home and relaxed there and would highly recommend Le Regnac to all. Jan was a brilliant host who ensured our stay was very enjoyable. We always say we will go back to places and never do but in this case we will make an exception. Many thanks Jan.

“Great house for a relaxing and peaceful holiday”

Reviewed 19 Aug 2012

Le Reynac is a lovely house, very well equipped and spacious. The barn acts as a great games room, perfect for all weather. A car is essential but there is plenty to do within a short drive. The beach at La Jermayne is really nice, clean, great swimming. The area is very good for cycling with quiet roads, rolling hills and shady forest roads. The owner is very helpful and keen to ensure guests have a good holiday.
