La Casa Francesa has been recently restored and retains many original features: it'sprivate terrace offers stunning views to the Mediterranean and the snow-capped Sierra Nevada mountains. Situated in the Barrio Cantarranas, or street of singing frogs, the apartment benefits from a semi-rural location whilst being only minutes walk away from all the amenities of the village.
The historic village of Valor is the birthplace of Aben Humeya, leader of the last Moors fighting in Spain. During the village Fiesta in September the villagers re-enact the last battles complete with castle, horses and lots of muskets. During the week long celebration there is music and dancing in the square every night, concerts in the church and the amazing candlelit procession from the church.
Valor has a bank, 2 small supermarkets - one of which is also the bakery, for fresh bread every morning, a pharmacy and 6 bars (8 in the summer months); there are 3 restaurants and a municipal swimming pool. Nestled on the edge of the Sierra Nevada National Park, Valor offers something for everyone. There are fantastic local walks, mountain-biking and horse riding in the high Sierras, or simply relax on the terrace with a glass of wine and a book.

The apartment has been recently restored and retains many original features including cane and beam ceilings and a stone feature- wall. The kitchen and shower-room benefit from modern fittings, with hydro-shower, gas hob and electric oven. Comfortably furnished for 4 people there are 2 spacious living spaces, one of which has a double sofa bed. There is a separate dining level with fantastic views but, honestly, you will spend so much time on the terrace you probably won't use it much.
There is TV/Video/DVD and a CD player; we provide books, videos and DVDs too. We only live upstairs so if there's anything you need - from a bigger pan to a food processor - we are happy to help.
|Further details outdoors|
The apartment has a sunny private terrace with pots of colourful plants and herbs. There is a table and 4 chairs, loungers and a gas BBQ for the exclusive use of the guests.
Each evening the swallows treat us to a fantastic aerial display and we often see Gosshawks too. The fact that you are immediately next to the kitchen makes for easy outdoor dining and sipping a sun downer watching the sunset.
We are in the process of developing the grounds: to date we have planted vines from a local organic bodega (first Vino Cantarranas expected 2011) and lots of veggies. We have some chickens so you can help yourself to eggs and we HOPE to start digging our own pool this summer.
There is vehicular access to the property and parking in the grounds.
A welcome pack is provided including a bottle of local wine. There are several award-winning Bodegas in the area, one only 10 minutes away and in the future we hope to provide wine from our own vines which we planted this spring: there will be eggs from our chickens too.
The village swimming pool is only a few minutes walk away and has a fantastic bar/BBQ for long days in the sunshine.
The english owners live on-site and are happy to help any time with information and ideas on where to visit.
We can provide a 3 course meal or BBQ for those evenings when you are SO relaxed you don't want to leave the apartment. Please ask for further information
The Andalucia region
Las Alpujarras Granadinas are a string of white-washed villages stretching though the Sierra Nevada National Park. Sunshine all year round makes it an ideal destination when things are cold and grey at home; the GR7 runs close by the property making it an ideal base for walking or cycling.
Granada and the amazing Alhambra Palace is less than 2 hours drive away; the Arab Baths and the Science Park are also well worth a visit.
Over the Puerta de la Ragua mountain pass you will find Guadix, famous for it's cave houses, and Purullena with it's street of pottery shops.
The nearest beach is about 35 minutes away by car. This is at Adra, a Spanish resort and fishing port. The more well-known tourist beaches of Roquetas de Mar and Aguadulce are about 1 hour away. These are larger places with more bars and restaurants, but also many more visitors. The Cabo de Gata Natural Park and wildlife reserve is beyond Almeria, about 1.25 hours away. There are a number of small coves and bays with beach cafes to the west of here and we can provide information on request. For more information please see our website.
Set within the Sierra Nevada National Park, the area is known for it's walks, 3 of which are marked from the village; should you want to attempt anything more strenuous we can recommend a local guide for a great day out. There are more indigenous wildflowers in the region than anywhere else in Europe, making each walk even more interesting and providing great opportunties for photographs.
The area has featured in several famous books including "South from Granada" by Gerard Brenan and, more recently, "Driving Over Lemons" by Chris Stewart. Should you wish for something more strenuous - horseriding, mountain-biking, bowling, go-karting, motorcycle treks, abseiling - or creative - stained glass making or cooking - we can help you organise any of these activities during your stay.
Valor celebrates it's Fiesta in mid September with music and dancing in the square every night, concerts by the local Brass Band and the amazing candlelit procession from the church.
Granada is one of the last provinces where a free tapa is given with most alcoholic drinks in the bars so on a leisurely walk around the village you can quench your thirst and take a free lunch at the same time.
The nearest small town, Ugijar, is 10 minutes drive away, it has a number of bars and restaurants, larger supermarkets and a post office. Further afield are many villages with interesting Fiestas throughout the year: see our website for more information.
