Location description from owner

The Abruzzo region

Abruzzo is known for the Gran Sasso and Maiella National Parks, the largest protected area in the whole of Europe. It has a great deal to offer the holiday maker; you will find the highest peaks of the Apennines, the Gran Sasso (Monte Corno 9,560 feet), Maiella and Velino-Sirente, perfect for walking, climbing, cycling and kayaking. Its landscape of mountains, deep canyons and valleys offer a natural beauty rivaling any other region. The Abruzzo coastline has wide, sandy shores, high, jagged cliffs, narrow creeks, pebble beaches and in some places it is positively wild. With something to suit all tastes, traditional villages and historic towns, an astonishing wealth of art and culture, regional gastronomy, Abruzzo is said to be the last undiscovered region of Italy.

Vallecorvo

The town of Sulmona is situated in the centre of the Peligna Valley at the foot of the Maiella mountain range. The birth place of the great poet Ovid, Sulmona preserves its heritage of monuments, architecture and works of art. Today the town is also an important agriculture and commercial centre and is famous the world over for its confetti (sugar coated almond candies), and for its goldsmiths. The town offers a wide range of shops, boutiques and restaurants. There are also excellent sports facilities including tennis courts, a swimming pool and horse riding. About 10 mins outside Sulmona is an excellent waterpark with shaded picnic area, ideal for a day out. Lake Scanno is just a 20 minute drive, while the winter resort town of Roccaraso, central Italy's largest winter resort with snow and pistes open from November to April, is just 40 mins away. “A room with a view”

Reviewed 16 Sep 2015

This is a truly special place. Abruzzo may not be as familiar as other Italian regions but it is so worth the trouble to discover and we couldn't recommend a better to place to stay while you do it. The appartment at Villa Ulignano has everything you could want, modern, spotlessly clean with all the amenities necessary for a comfortable stay, and quite a few extras such as good books, dvds and toys/games for families. The mountain views from each window are spectacular and the garden is very well kept with lots of flowers and fresh herbs. In addition to this the hosts,Dougie and Michele are inspirational, really fitting in so well with the local area and culture. Their passion and affection for Abruzzo is contagious - we certainly caught the bug! So many beautiful little villages to see all within a short driving distance - Pacentro is a gem. The lake at Scanno is also very beautiful and the drive there through the mountains is unforgettable. Four days really wasn't enough time to see everything we wanted so we will just have to go back!

Thank you very much for your kind words about Villa Ulignano & Abruzzo. We're very glad you liked the area as much as we do & agree that it is truly something special & undiscovered (ssshhh!). It would be lovely to see you both back one day in the future, kind regards, Dougie, Michelle & the boys

“A perfect setting for a family holiday, away from the tourist trail, in magnificent scenery.”

Reviewed 24 Jun 2015

Villa Ulignano and its location exceeded our expectations ! The owners Michelle and Dougie are so friendly and helpful, with suggestions of activities in the surrounding area tailored to suit our family and interests. The rural location has stunning views, and yet the nearest town with all amenities was only a short drive away. We loved the opportunity to visit the mountains and the beach, as well as relax and have valuable downtime as a family at the villa, as it has beautiful gardens, toys and games for the children. The apartment is clean, spacious and very well equipped; includes bbq and lovely little balcony/terrace to sit in the evening, even a vineyard on site and their own wine to purchase! Instead of visiting the perhaps more well-known areas of Italy, we thoroughly enjoyed the calmer pace, lack of tourists and very reasonable prices Abruzzo has to offer! Not to mention the delicious Italian food.... With two small children, this was the first holiday in quite a few years where we returned home feeling relaxed and rested.

Thank you very much for your kind words about us, our apartment & the local area. It was great to have you as guests & your children were great company for Jake & Josh. Hopefully we'll see you all again one day. Kind regards, Dougie, Michelle, Jake & Josh

“Fantastic apartment in a beautiful area”

Reviewed 13 Aug 2014

Apartment is really great.. good sized bedrooms, one with king size bed & balcony with view of the mountains, one with bunk beds. The whole place is very clean and modern, lounge / kitchen area is spacious with kitchen table with all the gadgets you could possibly need. There's a washing machine should you need one too! All the linen and plenty of towels were supplied and everything was there. You really can just turn up with a change of cloths and be fine! There is a private seating area outdoors and BBQ to use too. The apartment is up some steps and to the side of the owners house and surrounded by their small holding/ land. The owners are very accommodating and friendly - willing to give suggestions of places to visit if you need... (and they make the most amazing wine you can buy!!!) The apartment is 5-10 minutes from Sulmonia so you really need a car to get around and see some of the beautiful sights of the local area. There's plenty of places to go and explore some really lovely restaurants - (and so many ice cream flavors to try too!). Although you are in a mountainous area it was under an hour to Pescara beach which is a beautiful sandy beach. A brilliant holiday and fantastic place to stay - just wish we'd gone for more than a week... A great holiday to completely relax and enjoy a piece of Italy.

Thank you very much for your kind comments, it was a pleasure having you to stay & we hope to see you back here again one day. Kind regards

“Nice apartment in a fantastic region, and great value”

Reviewed 25 Jan 2012

A great region to visit with lakes and mountains all within very close reach and the coast is about 1.5 hours away. The local town Sulmona has great character and Roman architecture along weith some good restaurants and fantastic ice cream shops on the main street to entain the family during the evening promonade. Local lakes are good for swimming but local pools are ok for leisure swimming only but not for anything more. You need a car in this region for dialy life and to see the sights. The apartment is very nice and has been well thought through and has decent sized and comfortable beds.

We're glad you enjoyed your stay & look forward to you visiting us again one year, thank you

“Home from home in a beautiful location”

Reviewed 21 May 2011

Lovely apartment with all the home comforts - nice shower, well equipped kitchen, outside eating / relaxing area, books and dvds if you fancy a night in. The owners live next door and couldn't be more helpful - spent a pleasant couple of evenings chatting over a glass or 2 of wine! The area is beautiful - lovely to be away from the traditional tourist trap - with a couple of lovely pools near by if you fancy a day away from exploring the scenic towns and mountains. A visit to Lake Scanno is well worth it too!

Thank you, we hope to see you in Abruzzo again one day
