The Tuscany region

Siena, the region’s main historic city, is a short driving distance, about 40km, from the villa, and is a ‘must see’. It plays host to the twice-yearly “Il Palio” – the famous bareback horse race - around Il Campo, the piazza. Il Campo has many excellent restaurants around its perimeter, where you can sit and enjoy a coffee or a glass of wine and watch the world go by.

Florence, famous for all its art and culture is only 105km – you can drive, but a train from Buonconvento (10km) may suit you better.

Further afield, but easily visited for a day out, are the equally beautiful and fascinating towns of Arezzo, Assisi, Perugia, Cortona, Todi and Orvieto, each with its own history, culture and many Renaissance art exhibits.

Away from the towns, a visit to either of the abbeys at Sant’Antimo, or Monte Oliveto Maggiore, will leave you grateful for the timeless peace and tranquillity of this beautiful countryside.

Val d'Orcia

Vergelle is situated in the heart of the Val d’Orcia, which is part of the Crete Senesi (Siena’s clays) a UNESCO world-heritage site. Landscapes and buildings are preserved for all to enjoy. The Val d’Orcia offers unparalleled views of characteristic Tuscan landscapes with rolling hills, winding riverbeds and acres of olive groves and vineyards. The area has many historic buildings and features and is an art lover’s paradisevilla is ideally located for shorter trips to many beautiful towns:

Montalcino, just 15 minutes across the valley, features an ancient fortress, the beautiful Piazza Del Popolo and fantastic views over the Val d'Orcia. This small town has an abundance of small independent shops, wine cellars and famous coffee bars. You can buy wine, leather bags, jewellery, and plenty of other quality local craft ware, if you want to add to the luggage going home!

World famous Montepulciano is 30km away, Pienza, 21 km, San Quirico d’Orcia, 13km. A spa and wellness centre is at Bagno Vignoni, 11km.

Vergelle is just 4km from Torrenieri, which has a number of shops and which will provide everything you need, a new supermarket, various bars and restaurants, a bank, post office and a pharmacy.

San Giovanni d’Asso, 6 km in the opposite direction has similar facilities.

“Charming Villa but not ready for guests and poor management by agent.”

Reviewed 7 Jul 2013

Do not be the first guests of the season at this potentially charming villa and do not count on any service from the rental agent after you arrive. We were pleased with the villa, which was as described on the owners’ website, except that upon arrival the kitchen cupboards were “sticky” and grimy and laden with opened packages of food left by the last residents (probably several months previous). The towel bars left dirty marks on the towels. We had keys to three doors but only one worked. There was bird faeces on the steps to the only door that unlocked from outside – we used 10 kettles of boiling water to remove same. The patio hadn’t been swept for months and the garden furniture was dirty and in disrepair. In spite of having reserved many months in advance a heating contractor was there when we arrived and just managed to get the furnace going (it was 12 degrees Celsius – colder overnight) as we unloaded the car. What he failed to do was check that the separately-managed second-floor heating was functioning and we slept in our clothes the first night. Several phone calls to the agent delivered nothing other than a loo brush – she didn’t show her face for two weeks until our day of departure (to collect money). Oh yes, there were two small children (4 ½ and two) in the party and the door to the electrical area was permanently stuck open, the furnace area remained unlocked and the fence to the pool area could be opened by the two-year-old. However, after we spent a few hours cleaning and making adjustments for the lack of attention from the owners and agents we did enjoy the house. I reported all of this to the owner who said she was appalled at our treatment and would get back to us soon. As expected she didn’t! And imagine my shock when I discovered that if we had requested a cleaning service in the middle of our two-week stay we would have been charged well in excess of 100 Euros for it!

We have already dealt with Gary and his concerns, and taken on board his comments. Thank you Gary for your review.

“Great location, fits all types of travellers specially family reunions”

Reviewed 24 Oct 2012

The Villa is placed in a very special and beautiful area in the Tuscany region. Near (up to 1h - 1.20h) many special places and famous cities, such as Siena and Montalcino. The access to the Vila is by a not paved road, and be carefull to enter the road from Torrenieri. The house is great, comfortable and has many facilities. All new and beautiful. I really recommend this house and the hospitality we have received.

Thank you for your comments, they are very much appreciated.
