The Paphos District
Cyprus is situated at the crossroads of Europe & Asia & is the 3rd largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. The island is loved for its enviable year round climate, spectacular natural scenery & traditional values. An island of contrasts, the cool pine clad mountains & timeless villages are in striking contrast to the modern cosmopolitan towns & tourist beach resorts. The Cypriot people are friendly & welcoming. The average temperature around the Paphos area in winter is around 16-18 degrees & 30-35 in the middle of summer.
Only an hours drive from the beaches will take you to the foothills then on to the Troodos mountains where you will find life at a gentle pace in the sleepy villages. Here you can experience the customs, the local cooking & hospitality of the village people. visit local wineries or stroll through orange & lemon groves or watch the old ladies as they sit outside their houses making lace like embroidery just as their mothers did. visit byzantine churches & monasteries. On the higher slopes you can go hiking, mountain biking or even skiing in the winter months.
There are many festivals throughout the year which can be either Religious or cultural & are celebrated in various towns & villages throughout the region. Some have ancient origins, others are more traditional, whilst some simply reflect today's more modern culture.Generally there will be stalls selling local food & craft, wine & of course dancing. Carnival is celebrated 50 days before Orthodox Easter, the Easter festival follows with celebrations at midnight on Easter Sunday morning. In May there is the flower festival followed by Pentecost festival or Noah Day which celebrates the coming of the new season in coastal resorts. July sees the Art festivals in various locations & in August most villages have there own village festival There is a wine festival in September in Limassol & a beer festival in Paphos too.
English is widely spoken except maybe for the mountain villages & cars are driven on the left as in the UK.
Paphos the birthplace of Aphroditi, is situated on the SW coast, once the island's capital it retains an old town (Upper or Pano Paphos) with it's traditional narrow winding streets & market selling local craft, & lower or Kato Paphos which is the bustling tourist area around the harbour lined with many restaurants serving local & international cuisine, shops & trendy outdoor cafe's.
Kato Paphos is close to all amenities & there are many activities including a waterpark, boat trips from the harbour including pirate cruises & glass bottom boat trips, scuba diving , all manner of water sports ,jeep safaris, go carting & several golf courses.
The scenery around Paphos is cultivated with banana plantations & along the rugged coastline you will find small unspoilt beaches. The Akamas Peninsula is an area of natural wilderness with dramatic coastlines & coves where you can visit the last Mediterranean nesting ground of the Green & Loggerhead turtles on the sandy beach at Lara, or walk one of the nature trails spotting rare plants & birds. Paphos was listed as a World Cultural Heritage site in 1980 & has a vast amount of Archaeological sites to visit. Some sites date back to prehistoric times but most are Roman. These include the house's of Dionysos, Theseus & Aion's Mosaic's which are of 3rd century AD & considered to be the best in the Mediterranean., the Tombs of the Kings, St. Pauls Pillar, the Paphos Odeon, & by the harbour the fort & Medieval castle, as well as several museums.
If all you want to do is enjoy the beaches then there are several municipal beaches in Pahos & Coral Bay is a 15 minute drive away which has a safe, sandy beach for children to enjoy.
Paphos really does have something to suit everyone
