Description from owner

Description

Perched high on a clifftop, the Far Horizons is a 5 bedroom villa that enjoys spectacular views by day and night over the bay of Unawatuna and the ocean beyond. This listing is for exclusive use of the whole villa.

Situated just 10 minutes walk from the beach, down a path and steps past a temple (or about 15 minutes walk by the road), the villa is located at the edge of a small village community at the top of a steep and bumpy hill. You can dip in and out of the shops, restaurants and nightlife of Unawatuna as you wish, while enjoying a quieter and more authentic experience of Sri Lanka than in resort accommodation. We also offer a free daily tuk tuk down to Unawatuna or to the beach at Mihiripenna.

Our villa manager, Upul, speaks excellent English. He will arrange everything for you and will prepare all your meals and shop for you as required. All dietary requirements and preferences can be catered for. Meals are not included in the rental price, but the only additional cost is for the ingredients and transport, so you can eat what you like. The kitchen is modern and well equipped, but please note that the villa is not configured for self catering. Guests are, however, welcome to bring their own alcohol and drinks.

Enter the front porch, kick off your flipflops and enjoy the feel of the cool polished cement floors underfoot. Through the central living room, you emerge onto a large wooden railed veranda and outdoor dining area, with plenty of seating for 10 people to dine, relax and enjoy the view.

Down the granite steps you reach the grassy terrace, where the water sparkles invitingly on the pale green slates lining the 50ft infinity pool. The entrance to the pool has wide, shallow steps, perfect for parents to play with toddlers, or to sit and enjoy a drink. The infinity end reaches 6ft deep, but is furnished with narrow steps where you can stand to gaze at the scene below. Eagles can sometimes be seen both overhead and swooping down below the pool. There are both sunny and shady areas and plenty of comfortable sunbeds and a hammock around the pool.

Furnished with an eclectic mix of antique and modern furniture and artefacts the villa highlights natural finish teak woodwork, custom made teak, jakwood and painted furniture, handloom fabrics from Vyanni of Unawatuna and original artwork by artists from all over Sri Lanka.

The villa has 5 bedrooms, all with aircon, ceiling fans, four poster beds, mosquito nets, lockable wardrobes with plenty of hanging space, small fridge, safe, tea and coffee making facilities and ensuites with walk-in rainshowers and toiletries. All ensuites have non-slip slate floors. Apart from the Cinnamon room, which is located on the ground floor at the front of the house, all rooms enjoy a large balcony or veranda with ocean and pool view.

The ginger room (24 sqm) is located upstairs and has twin beds.

Saffron (26 sqm) is the largest room, located at the centre of the balcony and features antique double doors to the ensuite. It has a king size bed. There is also plenty of room for a cot bed or two.

Chilli (20 sqm) has a king size bed and archway to the ensuite (located behind the sleeping area).

Cardamom(18 sq m) is on the ground floor, has a king size bed and archway to the ensuite (located behind the sleeping area).

Cinnamon (17 sqm) is on the ground floor, at the front of the house and has a queen size bed (5ft), antique double doors to the ensuite and a private entrance from the side garden.

Wheelchair access is possible to the ground floor. The cardamom and cinnamon rooms, lounge, kitchen, dining and veranda area are on a single level and the pool area is linked to the main house by a grassed, sloping path as well as steps. Further details are available on enquiry.

Further details:

A maximum of 2 children using cot beds or sharing a bed with parents may stay free of charge. A child using a separate bed is classed as a guest. We have 2 cot beds, 2 baby feeding chairs and a playpen.

Smokers are welcome, but outdoors only, please.

Airport transfers, local transport and all sightseeing requirements can be arranged on request.

The lounge has a 47inch HD TV, with a 120 channel satellite package and an extensive hard drive move library. There is 4G wifi with up to 5Gbs/day of usage included. All guests will receive a fact sheet of information about the area, with sightseeing and activity suggestions, prior to their visit.

“Perfect!”

Reviewed 25 Sep 2017

This is the second time I've stayed at Far Horizons Villa. I made an error by booking Lakeview Villa (same owners) instead, so we showed up unannounced at Far Horizons. Despite the fact they were not expecting guests, the owner, Ken, and the manager, Upul, did not hesitate to prepare the villa for us. The villa is fantastic. The view is beautiful, the house and property is very clean and spacious. Upul and Pumi are excellent hosts. The food they prepared is excellent and communication is very good. Upul also offered to take us to a nearby villa for some live music, something new would not have found on our own. I recommend this villa without hesitation. Prepare for complete relaxation!!!

“A Sri Lankan Gem!!”

Reviewed 18 Jan 2016

We have visited Sri Lanka many times and traveled all over the country, staying in some of the best hotels Sri Lanka has to offer. Far Horizons Villa is one of the best places we have ever stayed in. We were initially greeted by the hosts Lesley and Ken who showed us around the place and informed us of the things we could do around the area and at the villa. Even before we had arrived, Lesley had provided me with clear and comprehensive information about the place, how to get there and was an absolute pleasure to deal with. The house sits up in the mountain with an incredible view of Unuwatuna. The house itself is quality and well designed. It has a homely feel and radiates positive energy. Rooms are bright and comfortable and the bathrooms are clean and fitted to a high standard. We hired the entire house and spent a lot of time there, just relaxing, wading in the refreshing pool or just simply taking in the view. This time was enhanced by the accommodating and super friendly staff. Upul and Piumi were so lovely, and made us some delicious food while also making us feel totally at home and welcome. They also catered for my 3 year old son and even treated him to some ice cream at their house! These two are truly an asset to Far Horizons Villa!! The grounds staff also were much appreciated, keeping the gardens neat and also making sure we were secure at night time. The town is a short tuk tuk ride away, where you can swim in the ocean or browse the local shops. There are many restaurants and bars to chose from where we had some nice meals, but we were most content to eat back at the villa where Upul and Piumi would prepare us dinner as we watched the sun set. We're so glad we stumbled upon this gem! We had such a great time here and we hope to return in the future!!

“Blew my mind - Far beyond expectations.”

Reviewed 6 Jan 2016

I cannot recommend this villa enough! I travelled in a group of 8 - ages between 14 - 83 years old and it accommodated it us all amazing. Whether you wanted to laze by the pool and take in the view - and eat the amazing meals cooked my the chef - or you could easily enough get a tuk tuk down to town to spend the day by the beach... The photos just do not do this place justice. The owners and staff go above and beyond to help and make your stay as wonderful as possible. I hope one day to return and will recommend it to everyone! Thank you so much for such an incredible first experience in Unawatuna.

“Wow!”

Reviewed 22 Nov 2015

We travelled as an extended family of 6 adults and stayed at Far Horizons Villa for 2 nights. Prior to our trip, the owner of the property Lesley kept in touch with me via email providing me with info on the villa, the services they provided and info about the local area. She was very prompt in her replies and made sure all expectations were in line before we arrive. It was our first visit to Sri Lanka and Lesley did an excellent job arranging for the airport pick up and transfer to the villa. Fortunately we decided to go with Lesley's choice because the vehicle she arranged for was by far the cleanest and most spacious looking one when compared with the other vehicles and taxis seen at the airport. The vehicle is owned by Prageet and he is very knowledgeable about spots to visit and shop while at Sri Lanka. Prageet's wife is an excellent tailor. She has a wide range of saree material at very reasonable prices and fantastic workmanship. After checking out saree materials around Galle, we concluded that she has the best range and quality. Eventually all the ladies in our group got sarees tailor made by Prageet's wife. Upon reaching the villa, we were pleasantly surprised to find Lesley waiting there to meet and greet us. We were actually late in arriving because we requested Prageet to take the coastal route which is very scenic and totally worth the slightly longer drive. Lesley gave us a personal tour of the villa and introduced us to the staff after which we chatted for a while and got to know each other better. I really appreciated Lesley coming over to meet us and ensuring that all that we had requested were in order. The villa is exactly as described in Tripadvisor. The unobstructed view of the beach and the vast ocean that stretches out to the horizon is priceless. I can honestly say that service provided by villa manager Upul and his wife rival even the top 5 star hotels. We tried the food cooked by Upul and wife on the first day and it was so good that we decided to have all our meals in the villa for the rest of our stay. We were provided with a menu which also stated the price. After tasting the food the first time around, we decided to do away with the menu and have Upul surprise us at every meal. Upul also mixes drinks and cocktails very well. We brought along a bottle of baileys and got Upul to mix it with the chocolate milkshake. It was divine! The villa is always kept clean, no bugs, etc. It is very new, I understand it is only a couple of months old built from scratch on a side of a hill. Very breezy, big spacious rooms. Clean toilets in every room. Large private pool, always kept clean. We felt very safe, there is a night watchman and Upul stays in a separate building in the villa's compound.
