“Beautiful beach retreat”

Reviewed 22 Jul 2017

6 of us - me, my husband, two children and my mum and aunt - had a wonderful time at Carnish Lodge. The house itself is plenty spacious enough for 6, very prettily decorated and well equipped. It's in a sheltered, secluded spot at the far end of Carnish Bay. For the first couple of days there, I didn't see a single other soul - this in high season - which suited me absolutely fine. There is a gorgeous beach a short walk behind the house and also access to Ardroil Beach and Uig Sands to the front. Also to the rear, there's a wonderful route to Mangersta along the cliffs, which takes you past/through a succession of inlets, bays and gorges, with the option to do some climbing and scrambling if you like. Uig Lodge is just up the road - they'll show you how they smoke their salmon and maybe even give you some free peat for your fire! - and there's a distillery which I didn't visit but will do next time. There's also some very pretty highland cattle that enjoy a sunbathe on the beach from time to time. Other than that we weren't so lucky with the wildlife - though I did see a distant sea-eagle which hopefully wasn't a crow, and my mum saw a stag being majestic at the top of a ridge. Despite how peaceful and remote the house feels, it's well placed for visiting local sights. Callanish standing stones was about 30 mins drive away, though absolutely heaving with other tourists which I selfishly found a bit annoying. On the way back we went to see the Bostadh iron age house at Bernera - this is another unforgettable spot, pure Tolkein country, and I wish we could have spent longer there. It's next to a beautiful beach, again with lovely walks all around, and it was a whopping 24 degrees and there were people swimming in the azure sea - not in their wetsuits either! There's also the blackhouse village at Gearrannan, last inhabited in 1974 - some of our party went to see this and were very impressed. I think though the main attraction of Carnish is the beauty of the surrounding land and seascape, and the peace. If that's what you like in a holiday, this is the place for you. The nearest place for food is a BYOB place at Loch Croistean (15 mins away) which is charming but has quite a limited menu so expect to cook at home a lot unless you're prepared to drive far for your dinner. I would love to go back. This part of Lewis was totally enchanting and Carnish Lodge was the perfect base to explore it from. As others have said - there is no wifi, which I personally think a bonus (only enhanced the splendid isolation of the place!) but it does make it important to either do your research before you go or take some books and maps with you. I neglected to do this and got a bit lost on some of my walks. My mobile signal (EE) was non-existent; there is a landline but outward calls are prohibitively expensive, £2 a minute after the first 30 secs free (no free 30 secs for mobiles) so this made it difficult to contact nearby places to find out about excursions etc. My only real gripe and not a big one.

“Carnish Lodge June 2017”

Reviewed 11 Jun 2017

Couldnt recommend this house highly enough. 6 adults and a 3 year old. All fitted comfortably. House was emaculate, everything you would need. Beds lovely and comfortable. Cosy sitting room with a lovely fireplace for playing family games or watching movies. Great modern kitchen with plenty of room for everyone. Two bathrooms, one with the most tremendous bath. Would recommend this house to anyone wanting to explore Lewis/Harris or just a week of pure relaxation. Only drawback, it could do with some form of wifi if any of your party are reliant on this to find out what's going on on the island. On the other hand we were there for pure relaxation and spending some time together as a family so welcomed the week of digital peace. Also there is a beach right over the hill to the back of the house that would rival any beach in south of France or Spain.
