The house has been restored to retain many of the original stone features and care has been taken to keep the traditional style by installing ceilings and stairs of timber. The stone walls are 50cm thick and keep the house cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
On the ground floor, there is a living room and a dining area with a very old fireplace which we protect dearly by not using it. Two stone arches lead you to the yard and a wooden stair to the first floor. The separate fitted kitchen and bathroom are accessed through the yard. On the first floor, a large landing leads to a bedroom with two double beds a fitted wardrobe and timber ceilings.
Outside the main building, there is a stone-walled yard made exactly like the old traditional ones. The house has been restored to a high standard.
The archaeological site of Ancient Tylissos is located in a strategic location, in the north corner of the village of Tylissos, south-west of Heraklion on the road to Anoyeia and Mount Psiloritis. Ancient Tylissos was a Minoan city that was flourished in (phone number hidden) BC mainly because it was amid the road that led from Knossos to the west Minoan centers and Ida Mount. In 1450 BC it was destroyed, but was rebuilt and prospered until 1200 BC.
In Tylissos the archaeologists found several plaques and jars inscribed with Linear A, which is the “language of the palaces”, as it has been detected only in palaces and luxurious Minoan mansions. Other impressive items that were found are the miniature paintings, which are compared in fine art only with those of Knossos. Finally, many tombs have been found in the area (many of them already plundered) dating back in (phone number hidden)BC with painted clay sarcophagi, jewelry, stamps, etc.
Around the area of Tylissos you can visit a significant number of caves including the Kamilari Cave, Hainospilios Cave, Doxsa Cave, Trapeza Cave and Arkalospilios Cave. There are also two gorges which are namely: the Almiros gorge, the Gonies gorge. Agrotourism is also a very popular among visitors all year round. Arolithos village, Ktima Kares and Agrotikon are the most visited sites for this and other leisure activities.
