Description from owner

Selkirk, Hawick, Ettrickbridge, Peebles.

Deloraineshiel is a secluded shepherd's cottage on a working sheep farm, located in the heart of the Scottish Borders. This is The Ettrick Shepherd country, famously portrayed in the works of James Hogg, in which Deloraineshiel is mentioned. Deloraineshiel is the ideal place to enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the Scottish Borders and is a perfect location to see all that the Borders has to offer. A traditional, local stone, white and black cottage located on the hillside, away from the road and neighbouring properties, Deloraineshiel has magnificent open views of the rugged, scenic landscape. The cottage is close to Hawick, Selkirk, Peebles, Innerleithen, Melrose and Kelso, as well as other Borders towns. Edinburgh is a scenic 1 hour drive away, or you can park the car at Tweedbank Station for the day and take the train. St. Mary's Loch and the Grey Mare's Tail are also a short drive away. There is a large deck and BBQ area with outdoor seating and ample space to sit back and relax both inside and out. Wifi and FreeSat TV channels are available. Linens, towels, electricity, fuel and a starter kit of essentials (milk, sugar, tea, bread) are included in the price. Access is via a track from the B711 which is accessible with care (4 wheel drive not essential). Be sure to close the gate behind you, so we don't lose any sheep! Parking for up to 4 cars is available. Although remote, major supermarkets will deliver. You will be welcomed by a local who will ensure your stay is comfortable and memorable. Local sight seeing, walking, cycling, riding, star gazing and more. We can help you make the most of your visit to the Scottish Borders, Scotland's best kept tourist secret!

Very Good

The perfect escape from the rat race - loved every minute of it. The fire pit, the homely feel, the open fields surrounding the property, the view across the fields - it was just what we needed. Thanks for a lovely stay.

“Deloraineshiel cottage”

Had a fantastic few days at the cottage, it was everything we could have hoped for, a beautiful well equipped cottage, in exceptionally relaxing surroundings. Definetly recommend as a base to explore surrounding areas. 10 out of 10.

“A magnificant house , but spoilt by previous guests”

If you like to be slightly isolated, this is your place. You need to climb up the hill to see another house. We did see a nice amount of wildlife and not to forget the sheeps on the grounds. There is a large kitchen, an very good utility room, good bedding, good bathroom, I even did see a fox from the window of the bathroom. Point of attention, when it was raining the leafs of the large tree became wet and did block the sat-tv signal. Please do not cut down the tree, but some trimming of the branches or relocating the sat disk might be a good solution. We were not so lucky as the guests who stayed just before us made a mesh. The mother of the owner was exhausted from the cleaning work, I felt sorry for her. I can forgive that she missed the dish with food in the oven that was due the best condition as mold was on the food. The main question, do we want to come back ? It depends, we have been so much in the Hawick area, that we woudl like to explore anothe rpart of Scotland. But it is worth to stay here. Wow the stars you see at night.

Owner's reply: I'm glad you enjoyed your stay and thank you for taking care of our home during your visit. You are correct, not all guests are responsible and I apologies for missing their leftover bowl. We would love to welcome you back. We got the local shepherd to cut a large branch off the tree, so the satellite internet now works well, even during rain. We don't want to cut down the tree, but taking a few large branches off really helps. Scotland is a beautiful country, so much to see. We are glad you enjoyed the Scottish Borders, which are often overlooked, but well worth a visit.
