From the owner

The house has only one bedroom, but a large kitchen / living area, a hallway and a bathroom with both shower and tub. It has a nice view of Turrialba volcano (about 35 km away) and it is surrounded by spectacular tropical vegetation. It's in the altitude of 600m, so it is never too hot. There are several very small villages in the area, with friendly 'natives' - not many of them speaking English though (needless to say, they speak Spanish). The immediate neighbours though (each living at about 100 yards from the house) are all English speaking expats. Reaching the nearest small city (Turrialba) takes about 1 hour by bus, 25 minutes by car. Note that Costa Rica is an exceptionally well-run, democratic and peaceful country (they don't even have an army - a noble example for the rest of us!). Please keep in mind that the property is more than 2 km off the main road, so a rental car, a bicycle, or willingness to do a lot of walking is a must (taxi is also available). A strong Wi-Fi signal provided by a friendly neighbour.

I wouldn't do it again... It was like a National Lampoo Vacation Movie.
Sep 2013

My wife and I rented this house for the entire month of September, 2013. After one week we vacated the house September 7th, and spent two nights in a hotel in Turrialba before returning the key to the… More

Owner's reply:
We would like to emphasize that, when guests are unsatisfied with the place they had rented, FlipKey will refund their money; they are then free to relocate (finding an adequate, affordable and nearby accommodation is quite easy anywhere in Costa Rica). Note that this was not done by the current reviewers (they did cut their vacation short to return to US for reasons we cannot speculate on). Also, there are also some basic and readily verifiable facts that have been misrepresented; for example, the weather forecasts for Turrialba (see the Internet) indicate that during September the daily temperatures range from 24 to 27 degrees C (75 - 80 F), while at night they drop to 17-19 C (65-68 F). Neither of these would qualify as ‘very hot’ or ‘very cold’ - one can hardly think of a more ideal climate (anyone capable of complaining about it will surely be dissatisfied with everything else). Similarly, reaching the nearest (paved and well maintained) highway is not a heroic act of the review. We have posted a picture of the road connecting the house to the nearest town; as one can see, it is decent enough to be used by any type of vehicle without difficulty. A Google map indicates that the total distance is about 3 km (less than 2 miles), which can be covered in a few minutes of leisurely driving. The presence of local workers on the premises was atypical and of short duration (a neighbor was building a barn). These people have access to the premises only when invited, and are always very polite and respectful, and keep their distance from the existing houses - there was no reason to be afraid of them. The property manager met the authors of this review at the nearest town to show them the way to the property, invited them for several meals at his house and allowed them to use his pool, washer, dryer, cell phone and Internet connection. He also organized a fiesta (with over 20 local guests) in their honor, and took them to visit the neighboring village and school. They seemed to enjoy all this and never uttered a word of dissatisfaction; neither did they request more dishes, pillows or anything else (which would have been readily and happily provided). In view of this, their negative review is quite surprising. In any case, anyone who rents the house can rest assure that any of their requests will be immediately attended to and met, as would have been done for the author of the current review (had he ever asked).

Peace and quiet

We stayed at the house for a month and a half and really enjoyed it. It's very quiet at night. If you like the country side it's the place to stay. There is lush vegetation. We could hea… More
