Location description from owner

The Puglia region

Puglia is the home of the magical Trulli and is acknowledged to be one of the few remaining and undiscovered parts of Italy. The trullis are unique to this region of Italy and fall under the protection of UNESCO. These historic character buildings are fascinating and provide a wonderful sanctuary from the summer heat with their thick stone walls and cooling stone floors. Alberobello the nearest town is only 8 minutes away and is a heritage centre featuring hundreds of trulli all clustered together. Exploring the narrow picturesque lanes along which they are all situated is a nice relaxing way to pass away the time. The stone walled country lanes leading out of town are dotted with these century old buildings, all of which nestle amongst olive trees and vineyards. Our trulli is situated amongst 3 acres of olive, almond and cherry grove and has been renovated to a very high standard with the focus on retaining all the original features, providing you with a beautiful, unique and memorable character holiday home.

Trulli District

The villa is extremely well situated for exploring the southern half of Puglia. It is situated in a rural position, that said, it is only a 10 minute drive to the nearest town of Alberobello. The town of Alberobello is famous for its quirky architecture, which is made up of hundreds of trulli buildings; it is very picturesque. In common with many towns in this region there is a large paved central area in the creamy smooth light stone where families gather in the long warm evenings buying gelati (ice creams) and promenading. It is striking that the atmosphere is so family orientated with toddlers and children running around late in the evening and many local old folks meeting and chatting. There is no graffiti, drunkenness or gangs of youths and it feels very safe unlike many UK town centres in the evening, which for most are a no-go area. After a leisurely evening meal you can wander around the bustling town centre, looking at the open-air art sales sampling the wide range of ice creams and enjoy the warm evenings. The market in Alberobello is a favourite place to visit, held on a Thursday from 0830 to 1300. It is a really pleasing mix with something for everyone. Nearby in the opposite direction lie the ancient walled cities of Martina Franca and Locorotondo. With baroque style architecture, stunning cathedrals, specialist shops and a plethora of cafes, bars and restaurants there is plenty to keep everyone entertained. In Martina Franca every third Sunday in the month from 0830 – 1230 there is an antiques market which is well worth a visit. Spread across several blocks of the town, it is a flea market where furniture, bric a brac and art are mixed with jewellery, new and old. 25 minutes drive away through some spectacular scenery is the Adriatic coastline and beaches. The Ionian coastline is an easy drive in the opposite direction taking around 50 minutes. More formal attractions nearby include the spectacular Castellana Caves, Zoo Safari near Fasano (a safari park and fun fair) and not forgetting the wine Cantina at Locorotondo, where you can sample and purchase locally produced wine. There are facilities in Alberobello for bike hire and there is also available an excellent golf course, horse riding and tennis all within easy distance. The property is also situated on the doorstep of the Val DItria region, a protected rural area offering peaceful rolling countryside that is ideal for walking or cycling. We can recommend an excellent bike hire company, you can prebook before you arrive and they will deliver quality bikes to the door. One of the delights of the region is the many cultural and religious festivals that are held throughout the year. These occur in most of the major towns and cities, usually throughout the spring and summer months. They are characterised by fabulous street illuminations and live open-air entertainment. Here you will find anything from formal classical, jazz or pop concerts in the local piazza to ad hoc street performances by roaming bands that appear to welcome any excuse to strike up a tune.Beaches are 25 minutes away on the Adriatic Coast and a little further (approximately 40 minutes) are the Ionian beaches. Both coastlines are beautiful and ideal for safe bathing. We can recommend good beaches which offer bars, restaurants and toilets nearby

“A wonderful home for the perfect holiday”

Reviewed 15 Nov 2015

Everything about Trulli Sulla Collina is even better than the listing details. Although only 10 minutes from the town, it is in a wonderful quiet location, with a lovely view, surrounded by olive, almond and trees. We didn't see much of Puglia due to the weather but the place was so comfortable that the absence of sightseeing didn’t bother us. We were 8 people in all and had plenty space, privacy and comfort and yet the house had a lovely homely feel. Moreover the house had everything we needed and the grandchildren loved the games. Alison and her husband were also very helpful and very pleasant to deal with.

So glad that everything exceeded your expectations and hope to see you again in future years. Jenny

“Exellent four a group exploring Puglia”

Reviewed 20 Oct 2015

The Trullo Sulla Collina was a perfect place to stay in for our group of 11 adults. Good rooms a space living and preparing food. Ideal place for exploring Puglia with pearls as Alberobello, Locortondo, Cisternino, Martina Franca and Matera in the naborhood. Even in October the pool was i use sunny days. Only difficulty was finding the way home after excursion , but our gps helped us following the beautyful roads in Valle d'Itria organized with wonderful Italian plan. We will recommend Trullo Sulla Collina to our friends.

Thankyou for your feedback, we are so glad you had such an enjoyable time and found the villa and area all to be perfect. We look forward to seeing and your friends again. Jenny

“Fabulous villa & pool in quiet location”

Reviewed 3 Sep 2015

I was a little concerned that no villa could live up to the fantastic reviews which have been posted by very satisfied clients. However I could not have been more wrong. The villa and pool were wonderful. The location is about 3 miles from Aberobello in a very unspoilt and uncommercialised part of Italy. It was very quiet with lovely scenery and everything you would need for a luxurious and relaxing holiday. We were a party of 10 with 2 families and a total of 5 teenage children and a disabled 88 year old grandmother. The villa was ideal as it was split in two which meant that the two families could be in separate wings and have their own fridge, kitchen and lounge. The villa and pool was completely flat which was ideal for the grandmother. We took advantage of Chef Angelo cooking for us on two occasions - highly recommended. We have spent a number of holidays in recent years in villas in Italy, Portugal and Majorca - we all thought this was the best one yet.

“Beautiful location and ideal for family holiday”

Reviewed 31 Aug 2015

This is our fourth visit to Trulli Sulla Colina - in four consecutive years. It is an ideal location for a family holiday and an ideal set up with essentially two houses next to each other, loads of outside space, a roof terrace, a gated pool and surrounded by olive groves and cherry trees. Really beautiful but within easy driving distance of hill towns, ancient sites, beaches and local markets. A really good place to relax and be with friends and family.

“Great villa and swimming pool in a magical location”

Reviewed 5 Jul 2015

Loved the flexibility the two wings of the Villa offered and the Trulli conversion was first class. Lovely rural walks from the front door revealed a way of life unchanged for centuries. Alberobello the local town is a must for exploring and there are plenty of excursions to other beautiful hilltop villages and the Adriatic and Ionian beaches to easily justifiy a fortnight's stay. Needless to say the local fruit and veg and wines were terrific. Finally, coming home each day to a cool swim and a relaxing drink in rural peace and quiet was the icing on the cake

“Perfect Puglia home!”

Reviewed 11 Jun 2015

We are big fans of Puglia and this is our fourth visit. We have stayed at this property every time as it is so lovely and is so well equipped it is like home from home - only nicer! The setting is rural but within very easy drive of shops and only a very short drive (5 mins) to the picturesque town of Alberobello which has great restaurants and shops to cover every need. We like it as it is very peaceful. The villa is spotlessly clean and is well maintained and equipped. We slept really well as the beds are very comfy and it is so quiet. The thick walls, window shutters and marble floors make the house surprisingly cool. There is a massive table just outside on the terrace overlooking the garden and pool which is shaded from the sun and it is warm enough to BBQ and eat out in the evening. The pool is clean and the garden well tended. We ate cherries off their loaded trees! Clearly it has been maintained well over the years as although it remains the same charming home everything feels fresh, both in the bedrooms and the kitchen. The villa is situated high above the town and the views are panoramic across the rural landscape. The pool area is enclosed and is big but has an area of long flat steps and a good shallow end which was great when our daughter was little. There is a games room outside with table tennis and darts and table football and although not sporty we used all three. There are three bikes too but we didn't venture out on two wheels! A big addition for us is that the property now has great wi fi reception both inside and by the pool. Mobile phone reception was very strong too. I would recommend anyone visiting to go into Alberobello on a Thursday morning to visit the huge market which sells fabulous food very cheaply and lots of clothes, shoes and bags. It is a holiday home we will return to as we have had such happy times there and it fulfils everything we need.

“Having stayed in many rented properties this one is outstandingly good”

Reviewed 1 Sep 2011

This villa exceeded our expectations in terms of quality and style. Immaculately presented, wonderfully peaceful and a thoroughly enjoyable place to spend time, in very gentle countryside. We particularly enjoyed the spacious shaded patio with its large marble table. The pool was beautifully situated and very well maintained. The outdoor furntiure (and indoor) was plentiful and of very good quality which added to the sense of luxury. The owners and local managers could not have been more helpful.
