Location description from owner

The Calabria region

In the land chosen by the Greeks to expand their culture and by the Gods, as the ideal residence for their children, there is a coast that is famous all over the world for its natural wonders: dazzling white beaches, exciting sunsets, a luxuriant and virgin nature, architectural remnants of the most ancient cultures (Greek, Roman, Norman, Saracen), we are talking about the “Coast of the Gods”…..

Along the Calabrian coast, and easily reachable by the local trains, are several appealing resorts.
Scilla, to the south, is an extremely picturesque fishing town with an impressive castle on a headland.
Pizzo, to the north, is a cheerful seaside town famous for its chocolate truffle ice cream.
Reggio Calabria is further away, but it is worth the train journey to see the two famous Greek statues - the Riace Bronzes - displayed in the town's excellent archaeological museum, and to admire the views over the Straits of Messina to Sicily.

One of the highlights of a stay in Tropea is a boat trip to the Aeolian Islands; either a daytime trip to visit two or three of the islands, or an afternoon - evening excursion to view the eruptions of Stromboli, an active volcano. Several different companies in Tropea organise day trips, and you'll find advertising leaflets and agencies selling tickets throughout Tropea.
Bear in mind that this is a long day out and could be cancelled at short notice if the sea conditions aren't favourable. The Aeolian Islands are a great destination in their own right, and if you have time for a longer visit, you could make it a two-centre holiday in combination with Tropea. On clear days, Stromboli is visible from Tropea.

If you have a hire car, you will be able to explore the other attractive beaches and viewpoints around Tropea, and perhaps tour several villages or towns in a day. The Costa degli Dei offers a succession of little seaside settlements such as Ricadi, Parghelia and Briatico as well as the viewpoint and lighthouse of Capo Vaticano. Zungri, a short way inland, has some abandoned cave-dwellings to visit.

Finally, there are various organised excursions from Tropea for those who prefer not to travel independently. The tourist information offices or travel company agencies can supply up-to-date details of these.

Tropea

Located on the Tyrrhenian coast of Vibo Valentia, along the slopes of the Poro mountain, the town of Tropea, cited by some historical sources, dates back to the Roman period, evidence points to the fourth century. A.D. as confirmed by some early Christian inscriptions, even if the official documents proliferate especially from the sixth century onwards and in particular with the arrival in Calabria of the Byzantine general named Belisarius.
To put an end to the presence of the Goths, the town was fortified by the erection of walls and the castle, around which the city develops, which was accessible initially through two gates: Porta Vaticana to the west and the Porta Mare which connected the port and a third gate: Porta Nova in 1785.
From 1875 to 1883 the castle and city walls were demolished and today you can only see some parts of the fortifications in the west, where Porta Vaticana was located.
While walking the streets of Tropea's town centre it is possible to admire eighteenth-century portals of Renaissance, Baroque, Neoclassical and Muslim influences (by the raids taken place) that reflect the tastes and social status of the owners.
The most representative is the Norman Cathedral, built on a former cemetery which dates back to Byzantine and Norman period when Robert Guiscard conquered the village.
But the real symbol of the town is the Sanctuary of Santa Maria of the Island, located on top of a small and picturesque spit of land jutting into the sea.
Ascetic location for Basilian hermits, it has undergone many renovations over the years, now it represents an important place of pilgrimage for the worship of the miracles of the Madonna.

In recent years a number of factors (an excellent city administration, increased investments and more) have made Tropea reach levels never seen before. Now thousands of Italian tourists (in August) and foreigners (from April to October) each year visit Tropea and the surroundings. There is still much to be done to stand up against other more famed seaside resorts of Italy, but the path taken is the right one according to many and every year that goes by Tropea becomes a city better equipped to respond to all needs of the tourist market.
