Location description from owner

The Lake Como region

Lake Como, known to locals as "Il Lario" ( lt.: Lacus Larius), with its depth of 410 m it is the deepest lake in the lower Alpine region. It's characteristic Y-form divides into three lake arms: Colico in the North, Lecco in the Southeast and Como in the Southwest.

The town of Como with 100.000 inhabitants is a beautiful and ancient town. Since the 15th century it has been an important centre for silk, the material, which exemplifies luxury, refinement and prestige. Como had been the hub between East and West, between India, China and Europe.

The cathedral ?Santa Maria Maggiore", built in a renaissance and gothic style, is one of the important churches in the North of Italy. Directly on the lakeside is ?Templio Voltaino" and a museum dedicated to the physician Alessondro Volta, the inventor of the battery, as well as other important monuments of the epoch.

.

Menaggio is perfectly located in middle the west shore. There is an interesting and scenic pathway alongside the lake and the "Lido Giardino" offers an excellent swimming pool and beach facilities. In nearby Loveno there is a gym with tennis courts as well as an eighteen-hole golf course.

Bellagio lies directly opposite Menaggio and has been a centre of international tourism since the 19th century. Here you can go for unforgettable walks along the lake. In the "Villa Melzi" and in the "Villa Serbelloni" one can admire the gardens with its exotic plants and classical sculpture.

Just 4 km from Tremezzo lies the "Isola Comacina", the only island on the lake. It can be reached from Sala Comacini by boat. The island has saved many traces of its history, e.g. the smallest Romanesque church and a baptismal church from the 5th century. A small restaurant, which opened in 1947, still exists and here one can savour fish dishes from the lake and other specialities from the area. A tour round the island takes around half an hour.

Only a mere two kilometres from Tremezzo, towards Como, lies Lenno, a beautiful unspoiled spot called the "Gulf of Venere". Here one really must visit the church of "Santo Stefano", the abbey "l'Abbazia dell' Acquafredda" and the marvellous Villa "Balbianello", which dates from the 17th century.

These are but just a few of the many places of natural beauty, art treasures and outstanding architecture, which the lake Como region can offer you.

Tremezzina

"Tremezzina" (a union of the towns Colonno, Ossuccio, Lenno, Tremezzo und Griante) extends over the west shore of the lake Como, directly opposite from Bellagio. The climate is very mild and the vegetation lush.

Since the Roman times this small piece of Italy has been known for its "eternal spring". The tranquil gardens, the olive- and myrtle trees surrounding noble residences and the many picturesque towns along the lake, serve as the frame for romantic lake Como. Tremezzo is less than one hour's car drive from Milan. It is accessible by public transport and also by steamboats, hydrofoils and private water taxis. Car ferries run on a regular basis.

The mild climate has contributed to make Tremezzina to a wonderful holiday resort: The German Chancellor, Konrad Adenauer regularly spent his holidays here, Queen Victoria of England, Guiseppe Verdi and many other famous personalities have stayed here. Enchanting villas and large hotels, some dating from the 18th century, make Tremezzo an object of international tourism. In Rogaro, one of the antique sectors of Tremezzo, high above the lake, one can visit an antique tower dating from the Middle Ages. The famous "Asparagus-feast" in honour of the "black Madonna" is celebrated here every year in May. From Intignano, where the hotel "La Perla" is located, one can take a footpath to the nearby ?Crocione" mountain

The ?Villa Carlotta", internationally renowned for its magnificent park, is a masterpiece of architecture and botany, where fragrant azaleas, thriving rhododendrons, lemon trees and banana, bamboo, coffee and tea plants compete with each other for the visitor's attention. Each room in the villa has is its own special piece of antiquity, which include works of art by Canova and Hayez.
