The Powys region
A county rich in history and culture, Powys covers the greatest area of land of all the county's of Wales. With pockets of towns and villages, the area has the feel of a place which has remained relatively untouched through the years, and the many castles and forts in the area pay testament to the political disputes which have been prevalent in the local history. The wonderfully ever changing Welsh weather means any one place in the county never quite looks the same twice.
The Powys/Brecon Beacons region has an abundance of tourist destinations, such as Powys Castle near Welshpool, where you may enjoy a tour of the wonderfully maintained gardens or even take a tour around parts of the main building. There are also many natural lakes and man-made reservoirs (like Llyn Clywedog, nr Llanidloes) in the county which as well as providing a great place to visit also offer various walking and cycling routes for the many visitors who arrive there.
For people who would like to visit the more urbanised areas, Powys has some freindly towns with plenty of local and well known shops and supermarkets. The market towns of Newtown, Welshpool, Machynlleth and the Spa town of Llandrindod Wells each have something to offer to people of all ages, and are each accessible by regular public transport (Arriva Trains Wales and Bus services).
Carno is a village in Powys, Mid Wales and is located between the villages of Caersws and Llanbrynmair on the A470. It is the village where Laura Ashley, the famous fashion designer, together with her husband Bernard chose to set up mass production of wallpaper prints and soft furnishings following a visit to the area and being overwhelmed by the freindly and generous locals.
The village has a local shop with Post Office facilities and kind and helpful staff willing to assist any visitors to the area. Also in the village is the public house The Allepo, with its welcoming atmosphere and delicious meals bringing punters from miles around.
For the keen sports fans, a trip to support the village football team will be enjoyable and we'll received.
Within a short drive in each direction there are many towns with plenty to do. To the West there is the historic town of Machynlleth, which has the Centre for Alternative Technology, a must see for any potential economic friendly tourist. To the East, the town of Newtown has a Sports Centre, cinema and a bowling centre as well as a number of popular shops.
Within a 30 minute drive in any direction there are several high quality and challenging golf courses, each offering reasonable prices and welcome visitors.
