The Catalunia region
The splendour of the river in the centre of the Ebro-valley with on either side the green hills covered with orange- and olive groves (fincas) procures an unrealistic sentiment, if one thinks of Spain being a country of
drought, arid soils and deserts. Facing south of Tortosa one can't miss the majestic mountain range of els
ports with mount Caro as the highest peak. The entire mountain-range is notable for the luxuriance of its landscapes and waterfalls and even ranches of fighting bulls can be found. Ideal spot for walks or bicycle tours whilst contemplating the splendour of the local flora and fauna.
The town on the banks of the Ebro with its unspoilt authentic character is certainly worth a longer stay. Notable
elements of the old quarters of Tortosa have been declared historic and artistic monument. Special attention deserve the Gothic-style cathedral, the Suda-Castle built by the Templars and nowadays a Parador, the Renaissance buildings of the Royal Colleges, the typical Jewish quarter, the old slaughterhouse and the beautiful central park and the so called jardins del Princep. Take a stroll through town, enjoy the views on the Ebro. Don't forget to visit the mercat (indoor marketplace). You will be able to discover right here a splendid mixture of people from all over the world with their specific traditions and customs, yet all being influenced by this unique Catalonian way of life, which remains unrivalled and which binds the inhabitants of Tortosa
despite their diversity.
The river Ebro itself is a veritable angler's heaven. The biggest catfish was caught just here in Bitem.
The finca where you will be staying is not more than 5 minutes away from the river-bank with one of the biggest
cat fishing companies with all facilities at hand.
In the Ebro-delta you have the possibility of taking a guided boat tour right to the mouth of the Ebro, passing the typical marsh scenery of the river-banks, but also rice fields, lagoons and unspoilt beaches. The delta
has a unique ecological value and it represents the second biggest European bird reserve.
You can hire bikes and discover thus the particularities of this flat landscape since many paths and tracks lead you into territories, where cars have no access. The entire family can walk or cycle for miles and miles without too much effort since everything is flat. Discover the immense beaches of beautiful white sand where you will probably be the only humans present. Don't forget to watch the flamingos, the herons and hundreds of other species from a short distance while they are searching for food !
