The Sardinia region

The Fascinating Island of Sardinia

Sardinia, though one of the regions of Italy, is actually a large island off the western coast of the country. Second only in size to Sicily, Sardinia is remarkable for its distinct 'popolo' or legally recognized distinct peoples. There are only two regions in the entire country whose peoples have been given this constitutional recognition. In fact, in 2006 the long standing four regions of the island were legally divided into eight regions, each with political recognition, power and authority.

There are several languages and dialects recognized on Sardinia, including Italian and Sardinian - which includes the dialects known as Catalan, Campidanese, and Logudorese.

The island is also well-known for its interesting music. It is the birthplace of Vocal Polyphony, similar to throat singing, and it is also home to the 'laundeddas' a flute-like musical instrument.

There is also a great deal of interest in sports of all kinds among the people of Sardinia, and there are many opportunities for visitors to partake of everything from windsurfing to soccer.

Travel to Sardinia is greatly encouraged as the islanders consider tourism one of their key economic sources. There is much to see in the region, including other smaller islands that are considered Sardinian territory, and many natural or preserved locations.

The town of Cagliari is the capital of the island, and its main sights include the oldest parts of the city at the top of a lovely hill overlooking the Angels Gulf. The ancient city walls still stand and surround a thirteenth century castle with two historic white towers. The Sardinian Archaeological Museum is also housed within the ancient area of the old town, and offers a glimpse of Sardinian history from its earliest and even prehistoric times. A Roman amphitheater still exists in Cagliari as well as an aqueduct and many ancient temple ruins. Cagliari is also the home to one of Italy's longest beaches - the Poetto runs for 13 kilometers, and is currently under protective restoration from long term erosion.

Torre del Pozzo

Territory of Torre del Pozzo:

The Spanish tower situated on a rock is dated 1500 b.c. Near the tower, there is a well, that a legend tells that Phoenicians used it to make their sacrifices in honor of the primordial God Baal
