Location description from owner

The Basse-Normandie region

Normandy is of course famous for the landing beaches of WW2 and the mulberry harbours, and for being the birthplace of William the Conqueror, immortalised in the Bayeux tapestry along with the unfortunate Harold. Away from the coastline are villages set among rolling hills, fields, forests and rivers, with major towns such as Bayeux and Caen nearby. Normandy is at its most beautiful in spring, when the wild spring flowers line the lanes and hedgerows, and in autumn when the trees turn glorious technicolour. In summer it relaxes for a while. The climate is similar to the south of England, and keeps the countryside green and lush.

Torigni-sur-Vire

Torigni-sur-Vire is a small market town within 5 minutes drive from the gite, with a thriving market on Monday mornings and all amenities such as restaurants, shops, post office and banks. There are several large lakes to walk around, and evidence of the links with the princes of Monaco in the chateau (now the Hotel de Ville) and surrounding buildings. Conde-sur-Vire nearby has a canoeing-kayaking centre, velorail, and a superb creperie, and a tow path along the river Vire which is ideal for walking or cycling all the way to Saint-Lo or to Tessy-sur-Vire. There's a wide range of outdoor activities in the area, including a bungee-jumping centre at a nearby viaduct with amazing views over the countryside

“Excellent - Could not fault in any way.”

Reviewed 3 Aug 2013

We spent two weeks in this lovely holiday home and would have liked to have been staying for another two. Steve and Eve have gone out of their way to ensure that their guests have everything they need for a relaxing and comfortable stay. They are welcoming and friendly hosts and willing to offer help or give advice if required. The house is in a lovely quiet area and is not overlooked at all. However there are excellent supermarkets, restaurants, shops and a market within a very short drive. There are so many interesting places to visit and things to do, we feel we only scratched the surface and recommend a two week stay to allow some time just to relax and enjoy the beautiful local countryside. We had a perfect holiday and will definitely make a return visit.

“Superb Cottage with a warm welcome”

This cottage is in an excellent location to explore Normandy's tourist attractions. It is quiet, relaxing and the local walks are scenic. Steve and Eve were so helpful with suggestions of where to visit and how to get there. If your French is lacking, they will assist you if you wish to make a reservation at a restaurant nearby. The amenities at the cottage are superb and you lack for nothing. Torigni sur Vire is well served with enough shops to satisfy your desire for local produce.

“Great accomodation in ideal position to visit beautiful places in Normandy & Brittany”

This nice and cosy cottage was for one week the perfect home for us when we came back from our daily trips in this beautiful part of France. D-Day beaches and musea (especially the Memorial in Caen), the Bayeux Tapestry, Mont-Saint Michel, Cancale, St-Malo, Dinan, all within easy reach. For garden lovers we can recommend the beautiful 'Jardin de Castillon'. Steve and Eve gave us a warm welcome and were always nearby for information but absolutely not intrusive. We had a wonderful time there and will highly recommend a stay in this well equipped romantic gite!!

“Great hosts and very peaceful.”

A great place to explore the Normandy area. The D-Day beaches and Bayeaux are very easy to get to and the roads are excellent. The local village markets are a delight and recommended. We really felt welcome and had a wonderful time. I can't say enough about the hospitality and welcome we got from from Steve and Eve. They went out of their way to be helpful and answer all our questions. The village of Torgini is a great place and the local bakery was a favorite.

“Very comfortable, well appointed cottage in a wonderfully peaceful location.”

This was our second holiday in this cottage and it will not be our last! Steve and Eve are great hosts and have ensured that the cottage contains everything you could possibly need for your stay. There is easy parking which makes loading and unloading your car a simple job. It is really peaceful there, tucked away in the countryside but is in easy reach of lovely towns and villages. If the weather turns a little nippy there is always a good supply of logs for the wood burning stove and access to the english tv is a bonus.

“Ideal location for a family holiday.”

The thing I liked most about this place was its location, it can seem very quiet and yet it does't take long to get into town, Torigni is a splendid town and the market is excellent. We spent our time between staying local and exploring further afield in Normandy. The children loved the chickens and I must say the eggs were wonderful, thanks to our hosts for making us feel welcome and I wish them very success.

“Perfect retreat for a relaxing get away from it all holiday”

Reviewed 16 Sep 2012

We stayed at this gite for the first week in September - it was a last minute booking picked from the website and we are so glad that we ended up here! Steve and Eve Hill were very welcoming and collecting the key was hassle free. They gave us local information about the area, markets etc and there was also a drawer full of interesting leaflets with places to see. We were so impressed with the quality and style of the decor and how well equipped the gite was with everything you could possibly need - extensive DVD collection for rainy days and even a wood burning fire in the living room for the colder evenings and a BBQ in the garden for the summer. Although tucked away in the middle of peaceful countryside, we found the gite very easy to get to from the main roads and only a few kilometres from the town with excellent supermarkets and coffee shops. A super location for exploring the nearby Normandy beaches and lovely town of Bayeux or just relaxing in the stunning private garden with a glass of wine! We would definitely recommend this to couples and/or families looking for a relaxing holiday away from the stresses and strains of life!
