The Aquitaine region
The Lot et Garronne and South Dordogne area of France offers the perfect combination of things to do and see, a perfect place to relax and unwind and lots of interesting things to see.
Places to visit in the region you will find châteaux, including Bonaguil, Beynac and Biron, medieval towns including Domme, Belves, Monpazier and Sarlat and also Bastites, Villerieal, Monflanquin, Cancon, Castilones Duras, and Eyment. You will find unspoilt countryside, rivers and caves, beautiful gardens and small unspoilt villages and several classed as 'most beautiful villages in France.
Much of the most beautiful rural architecture in France, or perhaps to be found anywhere is to be seen here. Ancient houses, barns, pigeonniers and churches simply form part of the unchanging landscape.
The weekly markets in many villages are a must. They are packed with the freshest and tastiest produce and work of local artisans. In the summer many of these towns also have nocturnal markets. These are usually lots of fun and cheap way to eat well. Each square will be packed with picnic tables surrounded by market stalls. Issigeac Sunday (am) is one of the best. (A list of all the markets in the area will be left in the information book in the house).
Also check tourist office for activities specific to the period that you are staying - e.g. Bodegas (street parties open to all).
Canoeing along the river Lot or Dordogne is a favourite. The canoes are hired from one of several hire companies that operate along the rivers. It's perfectly suitable for children. You can picnic on the banks and perhaps in a place suitable for paddling and swimming.
Parc en Ciel, Lacapelle Biron - This is treetop adventure. Absolutely everyone who goes loves it. There are different levels of challenge according to your site and bravado. There are also some animals and amusements for those children who are too small to go into the treetops.
Parc Walibi, Agen - This is a very large amusement park. A big hit with children. The park offers roller coasters, water slides and rides.
Lougratte Lake (swimming Lake) offers a nice day out. Pony trekking, quad bike riding and the Aqua Park are also close.
Not to forget Tombeboeuf has a beautiful 9 hole golf course and two other golf courses are within 30min drive.
There are many, many vinyards in the area and most are open to guest wine tasting. Some of the château's have excellent facilities i.e. Château's de Monbazillac near Bergerac.
There are a great deal of Caves in the region. Domme (highly recommended) is entered directly from the town centre, the caves at Domme are the largest in Perigord Noir. Others to visit are Les Pujols, Le Grottes de Fonirou and Castella where there is also mini golf here.
